UK Rules Uber Drivers Entitled To Workers’ Rights

Photo via Flickr (freestocks.org)
A landmark UK ruling on the employment status of Uber drivers could have major knock-on effects for almost half a million nominally self-employed Brits.

On Oct. 28, a London employment tribunal ruled people who drive for Uber are workers, not self-employed — and entitled to benefits like sick pay and the minimum wage.

Uber has always maintained its drivers are independent contractors, and it’s just a tech platform connecting riders and drivers — so the ruling could have huge implications for it and its 40,000-strong UK driver fleet.
