Visit To Motorcoach Plant In Spain Gives Great Insights

The Irizar motorcoach plant in San Sebastian, Spain, where the i6 bus is built for the U.S. market distributed by INA Bus Sales. (photo: Irizar/INA)

Last April I was invited to tour the Irizar motorcoach plant in San Sebastian, Spain, along with 12 bus operators from North America.

I learned a lot. It was fascinating to see a European bus facility in full production, to be sure, but the greatest intel I got was from talking to the hosts and spending time with the operator guests. While I see the differences between the “big” buses and luxury shuttles, we are all so similar in many ways. A vehicle for hire — for charter, I should say — is distinct from courtesy transportation.

That’s an important footnote. Because if you are in the market for a bus, before you make the leap, know exactly what you intend to do with that bus. For instance, if you plan to procure contract work in your market, what kind is it? If you want to get a contract with a parking lot owner to outsource their shuttle work, or a hotel to airport shuttle, or a retirement home that provides transportation to town for their occupants, those shuttle buses are likely to be complimentary. Therefore, you would not invest in a luxury coach, but a courtesy shuttle instead, or a basic people mover.

However, if you are targeting collegiate contracts, you can’t secure that business without being able to offer a large coach. Does it have to be over-the-top deluxe? Probably not. But you must get that detail before you invest in a bus. Then, if your market is a convention, retreat, or special meeting destination, be sure you talk to meeting planners about what they need for equipment before you plunge in and buy. I know an operator with many clients from Dubai. He must have top-of-the-line buses for that sector of his business.

Tours and staycations continue to gain popularity nationwide, so if your market teems with tour potential, investing in buses is a good idea if you can offer the right ones. The comfort of a bus on even a day tour is paramount to the overall experience. Do your homework.

The volume of local business dictates the size and scope of any fleet. Never just own a vehicle hoping to attract business; build your book first. Start out as your own DMC and outsource to trusted local bus affiliates. You will know when your book is built up enough to bring that business in-house by the volume, but always consult your accountant.

On the contrary, if you are going to play in the bus space (and I think you should if your market decrees it will make you money), I encourage you to make friends with all your motorcoach peers. Why? Because controlling your fleets is critical for long-term success. And rather than have too many buses or not enough, you should pool resources at the local level and lean on strategic alliances for overflow. This way you aren’t paying for underused metal.

Fill all gaps in your seasonal work. Nearly everyone in this country has peaks and valleys in their business. You should be ready to support both. At least four months before your high seasons, make sure to get aggressive with driver recruitment. Yes, it can take that long to find and train one good bus driver. Get in front of the slower months early on as well.

For example, I spoke to an operator on my trip who fights the summer doldrums in Texas by farming his buses to New York China tours. New York & Company, the promotional arm for the state, predicts more than one million Chinese tourists will visit Manhattan in the summer of 2018.

We hope you enjoy reading our “bus” themed issue. Don’t forget to email us your comments, questions, and concerns so we may help you! We are here to serve.

Happy Trails,

Sara

BusCon Expo To Draw Big Limo Names

BusCon is a great place to talk to many motorcoach vendors who support the industry.
INDIANAPOLIS — If you haven’t considered attending BusCon 2017, held at the Indiana Convention Center Sept. 19-21, you may want to rethink it — especially if you’re an operator looking for some good motorcoach advice and education.

Within the past few years, the chauffeured transportation industry has seen a shift toward the bus market. However, if operators hope to make good money from this segment, they need to know best practices. This year, the tradeshow will feature speakers familiar with the LCT crowd: Bill Faeth of Limo University & Inbound Marketing Agents; Aleja Seabron of The LMC Group; and Joe Guinn of Limo and Bus Compliance.

Faeth will be leading two sessions. One called “Leveraging Automation to Sell 24 Hours a Day,” will teach operators how to install simple automations onto their websites, social media, lead generation, and email marketing, allowing them to sell while they sleep. “Creating a High-Powered Infrastructure for Growth” will discuss how operators can grow rapidly, even in today’s business climate.

Seabron’s session, “Creating Your Social Strategy,” is sure to have operators leaving the presentation with an action plan. This interactive discussion will outline understanding customer demographics, platforms, and their purpose; content creation and curation; understanding your message; relating to your audience; and creating consistency and engagement.

“Compliance Made Simple for New and Seasoned Bus Operators” will be led by Guinn who understands the complex subject that confuses many new limousine and other operators entering the industry, as well as veterans. In this fast-paced class, he’ll talk about the required documents of a driver qualification file, maintenance files, and the new regulations surrounding electronic logs.

In addition to plenty of networking opportunities, this year’s BusCon will also feature a timely keynote address — “How Connected/Automated Vehicle Technology Will Impact Transportation” — which will discuss the evolution of the technology, how and where it is being tested, and its effects on the various transportation industries.

The 135,800 sq.ft. show floor — open Tuesday, Sept. 12 from Noon to 5 p.m. and Wednesday, Sept. 13 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. — will once again offer the largest quantity and widest variety of vehicles and products, with attendees able to use BusCon’s mobile app to get around the show.

Vehicle manufacturers slated to be on the show floor this year include Blue Bird, Diamond Coach, Embassy by SVO Group Inc., Freightliner Custom Chassis, Irizar, Mercedes-Benz Vans, MCI, and Ram Trucks, as well as offerings from the REV Group family of products, which includes Champion, Federal, Krystal, and World Trans.

Sponsors for the 22nd installment of BusCon include Host Operator IndyGo; Platinum Sponsor REV Bus Group; Gold Sponsor MobilityTrans; Silver Sponsors Ford, HSM, and Terrapin Blue; and Bronze Sponsors AC Delco and GoExpressTravel.

Exhibit hall only passes are free if you register by Aug. 18, with a full conference pass costing $98. To view the full schedule, go to busconexpo.com.

2018 Cadillac CT6 To Come With Full-On Auto Pilot

Photo: Cadillac

“Leave the driving to us.” That’s been Greyhound bus line’s on-again-off-again tagline since 1956, only now it could aptly be applied to an infinitely more upscale mode of transportation: the Cadillac CT6.

GM’s much ballyhooed “Super Cruise” will go on sale in the fall of 2017 as a stand-alone option (as yet unpriced) on CT6 models with the premium luxury trim package and as standard equipment on top Platinum models (the price of which went up $500 for 2018, if that’s any indication).

Lincoln Continental Returns With ‘Quiet Luxury’

Photo via Lincoln

If you ever wondered whatever happened to the Lincoln Continental, you’re not alone.

For many years, it was the flagship for a luxury-car company that moved global dignitaries and U.S. presidents from Franklin D. Roosevelt to John F. Kennedy, even on that fateful day (a Continental codenamed SS-100-X by the Secret Service). The first Continental, envisioned by Edsel Ford, came along in 1939, and later, the Continental Mark II challenged even Rolls-Royce in price and class.

The Continental’s popularity, however, faded over time, and in 2002, Lincoln stopped producing the car as it turned its focus to more Ford-like midsizers and crossovers, which, in all fairness, have done quite well.

But the Continental refused to go quietly into the night. It is back for 2017, and from all signs, Lincoln and parent-company Ford want to do right by the luxury brand.

CHICAGO — Steven Winkler uses Uber all the time and never had a problem until he recently spotted an issue on his bank statement: an extra $50 charge from the ride-hailing service.

He contacted the company online and was told he was charged a cleaning fee. They also sent him pictures from the driver of what appears to be a wet seat. But Winkler says it wasn’t him.

Why This Operator Knows The Value Of A Limo Education

Bobby Puri values the perfect balance of work and family. He's seen here with his wife Dee and son Arjun.

The big names we admire, like Walt Disney, Steve Jobs, or Richard Branson, had to start somewhere. These entrepreneurs didn’t just wake up with the knowledge they needed to start mega-successful businesses. They undoubtedly had mentors or spent a lot of time learning from others.

The same concept applies in the chauffeured transportation industry. Bobby Puri, owner and operations manager of True Elegance Worldwide Transportation in Fremont, Calif., believes the way to prosperity relies heavily on attending trade shows where you can learn from speakers and fellow operators.

Lesson #1: Close, Innovate, Learn

You must always be learning and implementing new ideas. The three elements of a model for success are closing, innovating, and learning, Puri says. The quote he built his business on is “always be closing.” If you’re not pushing and marketing to get your brand out there, you won’t see results, he says.

“Your company should be the first and only clients think of when they need transportation in the areas you service. You have to show affiliates you’re the company they need to use because your product and process is so smooth.” Companies can prove this by doing their due diligence and letting their incredible service speak for itself.

Good entrepreneurs never stop innovating. They must embrace technology instead of fear it and learn how to use it to improve the efficiency of their business. “I’m happy to see our industry is starting to understand this,” Puri says.

Finally, learning should lead to adapting and execution. “LCT has taught me a lot about charter bus work which is a fairly new niche. When I first stepped into a Grech bus on the Show floor, I didn’t think we could afford it. But I learned enough about finance through LCT and was able to purchase one; attending these shows is crucial to your success.”

Lesson #2: Focus On Customers; Success Will Follow

Although Puri started the company in 2007, he always had a background in transportation. His uncles owned taxi cab businesses, and he would wash cars and preform administrative duties on the weekend instead of watching cartoons like other kids his age.

“It was a good experience to have, and I feel like it was in my blood to work in transportation,” Puri says. After college, he worked for Progressive Insurance, AIG, Nationwide, and almost became a deputy of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office. In the end, he couldn’t shake the calling of entrepreneurship.

“Luxury transportation is clearly a different audience than the taxi business,” he says. “You’re dealing with different expectations and attitudes, but it’s also a lot more fun.”

The company runs 25 vehicles, including Lincoln MKS, Cadillac XTS and Escalade, Mercedes-Benz S-550 series, GMC Yukon XL, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans, Grech minibuses, and numerous Grech shuttle buses that can hold from 23-52 passengers. Puri is also ordering new stretches for their wine country business to comply with new California laws.

Since he first started True Elegance, he’s seen the business grow from being heavily retail (dealing with neighbors and family friends) to serving some of the biggest names in tech. True Elegance’s customer base now ranges from the Silicon Valley to the Napa Valley, and are drawn to the company’s focus on customer satisfaction, Puri says.

“We’ve gone from a meager $600,000 a year when we first started to attain significant measurable financial growth this year,” he says.

Much of his success comes from the fact he remains open-minded whenever he attends trade shows.

Lesson #3: Set Goals; Be Smart About Achieving Them

Puri’s goals include growing to $5 million in revenue by next year, starting a new sales and marketing team to scour different aspects of their market to pursue, and growing the company’s affiliate market share.

To succeed, he advises fellow operators: Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. “Whatever you do, try to earn equity via assets and real estate. Bills will always be there, and diverse investments will help,” he explains.

For example, try to own the lot you park your vehicles in, and don’t go for a low down payment on new vehicles. Pay heavy so you can own them and make equity to improve your cash flow instead of having that money go out toward monthly payments.

The late CBS newsman Bob Simon who died of injuries in a limo sedan car crash in Feb. 2015 (Wikimedia Commons photo by source)

Skyline Credit Ride will pay Simon an undisclosed sum to end the suit. The details of the deal are subject to a confidentiality agreement.
