iCARS-Limos.com Deal Boosts Competition In On-Demand Market

<p>iCARS President Ed Silver does a demo at the LCT-NLA East Show in Atlantic City, N.J., in November 2015 (LCT file photo)</p>Competition in the U.S. market for limousine pick-ups has shifted up a gear with the acquisition of Limos.com by iCARS, a startup in San Francsico that aims to be the typical corporate travel manager’s go-to service for arranging ground transportation.

iCARS is going up against Blacklane (which has raised $42 million), Groundlink (which has raised $20 million and was acquired this week by Marcou Transportation Group), and Deem (which has raised hundreds of millions for its various incarnations).

Staying Small Leads To Better Personalized Service

<p>(right) Bill Goerl, president of <a href="http://ift.tt/2jkO22G">Clique Limousine Service</a></p>ISLIP, N.Y. — Sometimes small operators might feel intimidated when they are asked how big a fleet they have because they are afraid this will hurt the affiliate’s image of them. What potential affiliates should be asking is, “can I count on you to take care of my client?”

Bill Goerl, president of Clique Limousine Service, may have a small fleet, but the service he provides reflects the success of his company.

Unlike some businesses geared toward being worldwide, Goerl’s is a small local operation that focuses on personalized service and providing elegant, upscale new vehicles like the BMW 740Li, Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes-Benz GL450, and Lincoln MKT stretch.

“This enables us to focus on giving your clients the same level of service they expect in their own local area,” Goerl says.

“We’re not a high volume company, so we are a very good match for smaller operators who specialize in more individualized service.” 20% of the jobs the company takes on are farm-in, and farm-out runs make up about the same percentage.

“The recent push has been toward that worldwide, ‘we can do everything for everybody’ model of business,” he says. Goerl thinks the future trend will go back toward companies that offer service tailor-made for the consumer. “We aren’t going to be gearing our business to the Uber customer, because if you want to succeed, you have to go after the people who don’t really care what the price is but just wants outstanding service.”

LCT CONNECT PROFILE HERE

Goerl wants to be there for the clients who have special requests such as bilingual chauffeurs, someone who has local knowledge and can give a tour or recommendations, specific newspapers, and favorite snacks and other refreshments. All the company’s vehicles have satellite radio and Wi-Fi hotspots as well.

“It’s been really popular in the past year or so, especially with international travelers who don’t want to use up their data or minutes, want to remain connected, and use the internet to make calls,” he says.

One thing he wants other companies looking for affiliates on LCT Connect to know is Clique Limousines doesn’t really do affiliate work where a client just needs an airport pickup.

“When someone says they have their top client coming in who wants to do something like a roadshow where they really need the chauffeur to know the city, or when there’s a demand for our type of service and you don’t know who you can trust for your best customer, with us you can call up and say, ‘Bill, you have to really take care of this guy, he’s my best client.’ You’ll be able to speak to the chauffeur directly whether it’s myself or one of my top people and know we’ve got your back.”

Half Of Companies Allow TNC Use For Business Travel

<p>Flickr.com image posted by <a href="http://ift.tt/1HHUjwg" target="_blank">Mighty Travels</a> (<a href="http://ift.tt/N3rZKX" target="_blank">CC license here</a>)</p>ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Transportation network companies (TNCs) are now allowed by one-half (50%) of all corporate travel policies, a jump from 44% in June 2016, according to the GBTA Business Traveler Sentiment Index Global Report – January 2017, in partnership with American Express. The Index examines business travelers’ feelings about their trip experience and how those feelings affect their behaviors on the road.

As policies expanded to include companies like Uber and Lyft, ridership among business travelers increased 21%. Most travelers anticipate using these types of services about the same amount (71%) or more often (18%) in the three months following the survey.

Use of home-oriented services, like Airbnb and HomeAway, also increased 20% from June 2016, despite only 30% of companies allowing this stay option. Most business travelers expect to stay at home-sharing properties about the same amount (72%) or more often (13%) in the three months following the survey.

“The sharing economy trends that have come to define personal travel are now significantly influencing business travel as well,” says Susan Chapman Hughes, senior vice president, American Express Global Commercial Payments. “However, nearly one in five travelers are still unsure whether their employer’s policies allow for sharing-economy services; making it especially important for companies to communicate clear details about the services and amenities that their policy covers.”

Pro-Trump Operators Help Muslim Owner Of Burned Limo

Some rioters who went on a destructive tangent when President Trump was inaugurated decided to torch a limousine, scrawling “we the people” on the side of it. The damages are said to cost somewhere around $70,000.

Interestingly enough, the owner of the limousine is the kind of person these rioters claim they stand against Trump for. His name is Muhammad Ashraf, and he is a Muslim immigrant who owns his own business called Nationwide Chauffered Services.

What Would A 2008 Town Car Stretch Limo Cost Now?

FONTANA, Calif. — Remember the classic Town Car limousine days, when a sedan stretch was simple, elegant, and straightforward? That was only nine years ago, but already seem like a long-ago nostalgic classic era.

The signature flagship corporate limousine of the OOs decade — the 72-in., six passenger, Lincoln Town Car sedan stretch — is now available on Limoforsale.com for $9,995 at 267,000 miles. The used former Krystal Koach-built stretch is being sold by Jack’s Wholesale Division (JWD) Limo Sales in Fontana.

SELLER INFO, SPECS & PHOTOS HERE

Despite its age and miles, this “super clean” stretch is in excellent condition, earning a 9 out of 10 rating for exterior, interior, and mechanical quality. The former Lincoln Town Cars still command interest and attention in the secondary market, even at 267,000 miles, which is by no means elderly status for a classic Lincoln Town Car sedan.

It has all the eternal amenities that are staples of traditional limousine service: custom chrome wheels, dual alternator, dual battery, power divider, power mirrors, power seats, rear moonroof, etc.

Metris Makes Mommies Choose Luxury Service

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — In recent years, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has come to be known as one of the most popular choices for new additions to operators’ fleets. But its lesser known counterpart, the Metris, has yet to turn heads…until now. Ivan Colon, business development director for Legends Limousine, said his company will be rolling out a new type of service in early February that makes use of the lesser known van.

A Family Affair

The company has become increasingly known around New York City for providing family transportation services. Since the area they are located in has transitioned from old Brooklyn into “new Manhattan” (many Manhattanites have moved into the neighborhood), the business has evolved to cater to a new kind of professional.

This includes stay-at-home moms or dads who are graphic designers, architects, or have small businesses they run from home, and household managers (similar to an administrative assistant who oversees the general operation of a household).

Therefore, these are clients who need transportation back and forth for their kids to private school and other extracurricular activities. “In New York City, there’s no reliable school bus system, and sometimes mothers who have kids at specialty schools will get together, call us, and contract with us for the year,” Colon says. “We monitor and schedule everything so they can rest assured their kids get where they need to be, safely.”

The company first tried marketing its Sprinter to these families, but after tracking website traffic to that page of their site, the vehicle just didn’t seem to be resonating with clients. Strangely enough, it saw much better metrics for the Toyota Sienna. It appeared this clientele leaned more toward minivans.

Therefore, the business asked for passenger feedback to try and help them figure out what the next best move would be. “The price point is different regardless of if they have the money to spend or not. It’s not about that as much as it doesn’t match what they want,” Colon said. Families desired a vehicle that could fit their entire family and would be easy to get in and out of. In this sense, Sprinters are relatively cumbersome.

Enter the Metris. The van has two sliding doors on each side, fits up to seven passengers, and has a lot of cargo space. The leather interior is easy to clean in case of spills (we are talking about children, here), and the company has even included in-vehicle Wi-Fi so Netflix can keep kids occupied and quiet the whole trip.

Making Calculated Moves

As Legends has moved into the luxury ground transportation sector over the years with sedans, SUVs, and stretches, it didn’t want to let go of its economy roots. “When corporate America does go to sleep, everything keeps going,” Colon said.

“Family transportation keeps our phones ringing. Our chauffeurs don’t complain because it ensures there’s always something to do.” A lot of the company’s chauffeurs have gotten to know the families and nannies they work with and have become an extension of their family.

The business saw this was a steadily growing segment and wanted to make sure the price point for a new type of vehicle would be attractive, landing somewhere in between the pricing for a sedan and SUV.  After sending the Metris as a sample just to see what the feedback would be, they saw nothing but positive results.

“We put little survey cards into the vehicle after every trip we did and the overall response was great,” he said. “The goal is to always collect comments from both your clients and employees who use your services and use that to improve.”

Now the company knows the demand is there for the Metris because it already gets requests for them, although Legends doesn’t officially have them on the road until Jan. 30. “Even our corporate clients are saying, ‘we’re ready, let’s do this.’ We have a lot of bookings and it’s spiked for the next month for road shows, which is unusual because usually February isn’t an active month for corporate travel,” he says.

The company has given its agents the ability to adjust the rate themselves based on the feedback received during the test period.  What they eventually hope to do is, after running this Metris program for the next quarter or two, land on a solid pricing point based on booking volume.

“As we continue to grow as an industry, pricing is very competitive, especially in New York,” Colon said. “Many businesses aren’t diversifying. They are shrinking their fleets and focusing on sedans and SUVs. We are taking a different approach.”

Turning Parents Against Uber

Colon said he can’t even count the number of times someone has called up and asked, “Why shouldn’t I just have my kid take an Uber?” His response? TNCs can’t promise they’ll have a clean car seat that’s the appropriate size. Legends carries infant, booster, and toddler seats.

“We clean ours every day. We take the covers off and handwash them with ecofriendly detergent,” he said. He also asks clients if they know an Uber or Lyft driver who is trained to install different varieties of car seats. “Our chauffeurs are required to take an hour training course on how to install each type of seat. If a driver is messing around for 15 minutes and starts to get frustrated, that’s not a good customer experience.”

Legends also takes an extra safety measure and rotates older car seats out about every nine months and donates them to local charities. “There’s a lot of wear and tear because they are used so frequently,” he said. They also choose to do this because car seat regulations change regularly. “There are recalls and we pay attention to that. We don’t want to be putting your child at risk.”

Since Legends is known for family transportation and advertises very heavily on it, sometimes they get on-demand requests so they keep car seats in the trunk. “Even though this sacrifices trunk space, it’s well worth it to keep that reputation.”

Sound Advice

For anyone interested in testing the waters of family transportation, Colon highly suggests you listen to your customer base. “It takes time to discover if there is a need for that kind of service in your area. Someone should always be paying attention to feedback. Look at your bookings and make a move. If you don’t have a customer base demanding something, don’t do it.”

Owners Of Dav El/BostonCoach Buy GroundLink Tech Platform

<p>(Official media photo from GroundLink)&nbsp;</p>BOSTON — Marcou Transportation Group (MTG), the parent company of Dav El | BostonCoach, announced Jan. 26 the acquisition of GroundLink and software provider to the limousine industry, Limo Anywhere.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The addition of GroundLink to the organization will help to finalize its direct on-demand product for the corporate travel space. Marcou and its affiliates will now be able to provide Fortune 1000 companies with an on-demand solution that will meet both their standards of compliance and corporate travel needs.

As part of Marcou’s Duty of Care, it will continue to perform background checks, drug testing, license checks, insurance, training, etc., expected from its corporate clients. The addition of the GroundLink distribution channel will immediately benefit from the increased capacity and geographic advantage of MTG’s existing global network.

President and CEO of Dav El | BostonCoach, Scott Solombrino said in press release: “Our acquisition of these separate and unique technology platforms is a game changer for the industry. These companies provide us the opportunity to directly compete with the TNCs, as they try to infiltrate the corporate travel market, and will allow the industry to compete in the on-demand market faster than originally anticipated. The implementation of auto dispatch and geospatial pricing can now be integrated into our already existing product to roll out the industry’s first on-demand service in the corporate market.”

Solombrino could not immediately be reached for further comment. In a statement via his public relations firm, he said: “This will be the first on-demand service for the corporate market with the scale to compete [with Uber]. This puts us on an even technology footing.” In particular, it will supply technology around dispatching and location-based pricing.

The acquisition of the Limo Anywhere software platform, which is the leading provider to thousands of operators throughout the world, will go through a major investment to ensure it is the most robust platform available in the entire chauffeur car industry. With developers all over the world, including India, Serbia, Ukraine, and America, Marcou Transportation Group will have the largest development team in the industry which will contribute to leveling the playing field with the TNCs.

“We are thrilled to have a strategic investor that will help to advance the technology on our existing platforms,” says Liz Carisone, CEO of GroundLink.

According to Solombrino, “This will give companies using the Limo Anywhere software platform the opportunity to integrate and transact business in an easier and more efficient manner and to provide growth to their companies. The combined network of companies will give us the largest footprint of legitimate and compliant chauffeured car operators in the world.”

Liz Carisone and Mark Gentry, President of Limo Anywhere, will remain with the company and in their current roles. Limo Anywhere will remain independent and separate from the chauffeured car operations.
