Cadillac Updates Amenities On 2017 Professional Vehicles

Cadillac is delivering a few updates and changes to its XTS Professional Vehicles lineup for the 2017 model year. Although the updates generally mirror those of the regular-market 2017 Cadillac XTS, they do differ in some ways.

To note, the XTS Professional Vehicles lineup has been developed for the chauffeured transportation, hotel/resort and funeral industries. For the 2017 model year, the XTS Professional lineup will continue being available in five models, including the livery package, stretch livery, armored, funeral coach, and coach builder limousine.

Industry Educator, Marketer To Release Chauffeur Recruitment Kit

Limo University founder Bill Faeth
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Limo U, an online training program for operators, will launch its latest course, The Complete Chauffeur Recruiting Kit to End Your Staffing Struggles Once and for All, on May 12.

Chauffeur recruiting ranks among the biggest challenges facing operators. As many chauffeurs leave for Uber or Lyft, operators are struggling to bring in new ones. With this course, operators will be given all the components needed to launch a successful chauffeur recruiting effort.

“What doesn’t work anymore is taking an ad and putting it on Craigslist,” said Limo U founder and Inbound Marketing Agents CEO Bill Faeth. “This shows the chauffeur the outcome of working for a [limousine] company. The biggest problem is competing against Lyft and Uber and all their propaganda they put out here.”

Since October 2015, Faeth has tested and deployed the chauffeur recruitment kit among 15 companies in 12 markets. The first three parts of the series are free, with the remaining components available for purchase.

“Chauffeur staffing is a big problem industry wide and we have found a way to do it better and faster than traditional methods used by most limousine companies,” Faeth said.

The kit includes job description copy, images, Facebook Ad targeting, and posting locations that actually work to acquire new chauffeur applicants. Faeth will demo the kit at a prelaunch Thursday during the Illinois Limousine Association meeting in Chicago.

Faeth, a former limousine operator in Nashville, Tenn., and Little Rock, Ark., drew upon his personal experiences in devising the kit curriculum. He has found chauffeur recruitment to be a challenge in both economic recoveries as well as recessions.

“I got a call from a dispatcher in 2009 and had to run out of my daughter’s dance recital to drive a client at the last minute,” Faeth recalled. “She saw me leave and started crying. We didn’t have enough chauffeurs. We’ve found a way to solve that problem with this kit.”

Cadillac Escalade Or Lincoln Navigator?

Both the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator are popular chauffeured vehicles, but which reigns supreme in the battle of luxury SUVs?

The Escalade features a 6.2-liter small-block V8. It puts out a stout 420 horses along with 460 lb-ft of peak torque. Maximizing its flexibility is a ratio-rich eight-speed automatic transmission. It also has a richly appointed cabin, with real metal, wood and leather. The dashboard and doors are wrapped in cut-and-sewn hides for an opulent appearance.

The Navigator’s powertrain, on the other hand, is totally different. In lieu of a big V8 it’s hauled around by a turbocharged EcoBoost V6. What it lacks in cylinder count and deep-throated rumble it more than makes up for with efficient performance. This 3.5-liter unit delivers 380 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of low-RPM twist (torque peaks at just 2,750 RPM).

Which one do you prefer?

New Audi A8 L Version to Rival Maybach

Apparently surprised by demand for Mercedes-Benz’ longest luxury sedans, Audi is considering a new flagship luxury barge to slot above the A8 L.

The company offers just the standard A8 and the long-wheelbase A8 L, while rival Mercedes-Benz sells the extra-long Maybach and Pullman variants alongside two lengths of basic S-Class sedan.

Audi has shown several one-off or limited-edition models that hint at potential upscale variants for series production. The A8 L Extended is the longest example, featuring three seating rows and six doors. Rather than focusing on length, the A8 L Chauffeur Edition features a more luxurious rear cabin with two power-adjustable seats.

CT6 Rear-View System Reduces Obstructions

A new rear-view camera system from auto mirror supplier Gentex is available in a few new Cadillacs, starting with the CT6.

The supplier said the high-tech mirror eventually will be available in more models, at first exclusively from Cadillac and GM, and then from different manufacturers.

The “Full Display Mirror” isn’t a mirror at all, but a display from a rear-facing camera mounted on the back of the car as high as it will go. It may look like a mirror, but it’s like looking out a rear-facing periscope.

Austin Ballot Vote Stops Uber, Lyft

Austin voters approved ballot that calls for TNC drivers to be fingerprinted.

AUSTIN, Texas—After voters here rejected a proposal for loosened regulations on ride-hailing apps Saturday, May 7, both Uber and Lyft have announced they will be “pausing” operations in the city today.

In late 2015 Austin’s City Council approved an ordinance requiring companies like Uber and Lyft to be regulated like taxis. That meant, among other things, drivers would have to be fingerprinted as part of a background check.

Uber and Lyft, in response, pushed a ballot proposal asking voters to choose between that city ordinance and a looser statewide law.

How To Face The Toughest Business Decision

Our industry has gone through many cyclical periods when merging, buying or selling companies became leading topics.

Once again, the idea of exiting or expanding through acquisition are worthy subjects with the rise of transportation network companies (TNCs), more government regulations, complex labor and wage laws, and the challenge of maintaining profit margins.

Asking Questions
To begin the process, you must ask yourself, “Am I ready to sell, and if so, why?” Most companies in our industry have started with one vehicle and built up larger fleets. The comment most heard deals with a seller’s belief that he should be paid a premium for the blood, sweat and tears he put into building his business. The reality is the buyer understands the emotional thought process. But his focus is on the company’s pre-tax profit, cash flow and EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization). Both sides must understand the differences in thinking here.

The personalities of buyers and sellers are an interesting dynamic, and like all essentials of business, the need for strong chemistry will enable the possible deal to move forward.

Documenting
The initial process begins with the seller getting his company ready for sale. Many documents are needed that will also be used in the due diligence process. Expect to have bound and ready the following once the buyer has signed non-disclosure and confidentiality agreements:

 • Two to three years of federal tax returns
 • Reviewed, audited or internally prepared financial statements for the same period. It should include income statements, balance sheets and statement of cash flow
 • Revenue by client for a three-year period
 • Schedule of vehicles to include year, make, model, mileage, term, monthly payment, lender’s name and balance remaining
 • Schedule of other assets
 • Organizational chart
 • Building lease
 • List of employees, their positions, and annual salaries
 • Schedule of all benefits
 • You will need several other items, but the above list is a strong sampling.

Negotiating
Assuming you both agree on the initial terms and conditions, all of which are subject to due diligence, you will then be moving toward the letter of intent (LOI).

The LOI is essentially a non-binding document that lays out the foundation for a structure between both parties. Established timelines will ensure the process moves along.

The next step is the due diligence work. In addition to all of the previous items, you can expect to receive a thick stack of documents the buyer and his team will want to review. In speaking with various sellers over the years, many have compared the due diligence efforts to going through an audit. As a seller, you must simply view this as a necessary step for the buyer to confirm everything you have told them. Respond to any questions as quickly and thoroughly as possible. Never forget you are trying to reach your goal of selling your company.

Other steps will include “reconstructed financial statements,” which reflect all expenses not present upon final sale. That may include all or a portion of your salary, salaries of certain employees who will not be needed, various perks, bonus payments, extraordinary expenses, etc. The purpose of reconstructed financial statement is to show a higher profit, which will increase the overall purchase amount. For every dollar added to profit, the seller will receive multiples of those dollars in the purchase price.

Last Steps
The final step will be the definitive purchase agreement, which may be attached to employment agreements for you and key individuals within your company. There may also be earn-out agreements enabling you to receive additional dollars that depend upon the future profitability of the company. Typically, your company will be sold as an asset sale whereby you keep the accounts receivable and accounts payable as of the date of closing. The vehicle debt or assumption of debt is negotiable.

As I’ve explained in my book, Selling Your Company In the Millennium, buying or selling a company can be a daunting task, spanning multiple emotions. Proper guidance can ease the process and stress, and enable buyers and sellers to reach their goals.
