How To Make Classic Rides Click With Millennial Brides

Weddings are cool because every one is unique. If you’re ever bored, just peruse Google, Pinterest, BuzzFeed, or other similar sites and you’ll find incredible photos of couples’ big days. From geek themed to traditional, I’ve never seen the same thing done twice.

As a female Millennial in a serious relationship, I’m not going to lie: I dream about the day I’ll get to walk down the aisle fairly often. What I’m not looking forward to, however, is planning it. These events are more expensive than ever and cause more headaches than you can count (or so I’m told).

When brainstorming for the topic of this column, I talked to a couple of my friends who have already “been there, done that” to get an idea of the Millennial consensus on the topic of wedding transportation and how operators can charm the 21st century bride.

Nay

Nasa Peterson, a friend I’ve had since middle school, got married in 2016. This was not soon after I had started working for LCT, so I was naturally curious as to whether she had hired a limo. As it turned out, she decided to forego it.

“Honestly, I really wanted to rent one because I always thought that would be amazing,” she said during a recent discussion. “But we had the ceremony in San Diego and the reception in Torrance, so that was probably the main reason we didn’t get one — it was just out of our budget. Since Randy [her husband] and I were paying for most of our wedding ourselves, we knew it would be too expensive and we’d have to sacrifice something else.”

When I asked her if she would’ve reserved transportation if money wasn’t an option, she said of course — who doesn’t want to ride down the freeway in a limo?! “I think the pictures in and out of the vehicle would have been worth it, and I would have loved to be able to treat my bridesmaids to a super cool ride.”

Nasa also mentioned the one thing she cared about the most was the engagement photo shoot. “I didn’t care if everything else went wrong; As long as I had cute pictures I could hang up on my wall, I was a happy camper!”

Operator Tip #1: Time to tag team. If you haven’t partnered up with a preferred photographer, there’s no better time than the present. A ride may be fleeting, but pictures are forever…so why not combine the two? Help your clients realize nothing is classier than a snapshot of a couple kissing in front of a sweet ride.

Yay

Joy Harbison, my one time babysitter, church youth group leader, and fellow Millennial, did decide to use a limo on her wedding day. “I made arrangements because I wanted Ruben [her ex-husband] to feel special. It was an expense I budgeted for because most things were geared toward the bride, but this was just for him,” she said.

“He got to drive around before the wedding with his friends celebrating. We left after the wedding in the limo and made an entrance at the reception. No one really saw us, so the limo was more for us than to make an impression on our guests.”

Operator Tip #2: It’s all about them — the newlyweds, that is. Some people plan for this day their whole lives. As all operators know, luxury vehicle service doesn’t come cheap, so make sure your price reflects what the couple will receive. They’ve spent all this time planning their special day — you better live up to those dreams of perfection.

May-bay

The one aspect of my own future wedding day I dread is the inevitable drama that will occur on my side of the family. My parents are divorced, and my father has remarried; simply put, mom does not get along with dad.

At this point, I have no idea what kind of budget I might have. But what I can tell you is in a perfect world, I’d be able to keep everyone happy by ensuring no one had to spend too much time with someone they didn’t want to. Assuming my current boyfriend eventually becomes my husband, I know he has family who lives out of state who will need rides to and from various venues as well.

Operator Tip #3: Get to know your client whether they have made a final decision to use your or not. Prove you care about them and deserve their business. Ask them questions — nothing too private, but help them feel comfortable about confiding in you to make the day go as smooth as possible.
