The Lincoln limousine with the wounded man inside raced away from the Washington Hilton Hotel. Atop the man, and taking part in a maneuver called “cover and evacuate,” was an agent of the United States Secret Service.
The wounded man being shielded by the Secret Service agent was the bleeding 40th President of the United States. The date was March 30, 1981 — 35 years ago today. The president’s name was Ronald Reagan.
The limousine, once used by Presidents Nixon, Ford and Reagan, is permanently on display at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich.
