Fine Print Says Riders Can’t Blame Uber For Unsafe Drivers: Under terms and conditions that riders agree to but few read at sign up, Uber says they aren’t legally liable for the safety of their drivers or the quality of their services. Instead, if a rider is injured, the driver appears to be liable. If a driver gets lost and makes a rider late for an appointment, or if a driver assaults someone, the company says it’s not involved. ABC 13 WHAM article here

21 Florida Men Nabbed In Online Child Sex Sting, One Paid $248 For Cross-State Uber: A Florida man took a $248, cross-state Uber to have sex with a child, deputies said. The 23-year-old hailed a ride from his hometown in Port St. Lucie on Florida’s Atlantic coast and took it 150 miles to Cape Coral. L.A. Uber Driver Threatens To Hit Passenger With A Rock, Steals iPhone: The driver picked up the customer June 17 and drove him to his destination, but the passenger forgot his phone in the car. During the ride back, the customer offered a tip for returning the phone, but the driver “became upset” at the offer and asked for more. He allegedly got out of his car, grabbed a large rock from the front yard of a home, and threatened to hit the passenger if he didn’t give the him more money. Los Angeles Times article here

Texas Woman Alleges She Was Sexually Assaulted By Uber Driver: The woman said she was drinking with her friends in downtown Houston the night of June 18. After the Uber her husband ordered for her arrived, she passed out inside the vehicle and woke up when the driver started to sexually assault her. ABC 13 Eyewitness News article here

Uber Trying To Make Customers Forget Surge Pricing Exists: Uber is now testing a new version of its app that makes surge pricing nearly invisible to customers. The lightning bolt on the home screen and pop-up box notifying riders their fare will be multiplied are both gone. Instead, riders who input their destinations will be presented with an ironclad, upfront fare. The Verge article here

Leaked Docs Revel How Much Uber Drivers Really Make:  If you listen to Uber, its “driver partners” can make a comfortable living — as much as $90,000 a year in some markets. Last year, Uber released a study showing its drivers earned an average of $17 an hour, above New York City’s living wage of $14.29 an hour. However, leaked internal price-modeling numbers and Uber’s own calculations show drivers in three major U.S. markets are just barely scraping by. Vanity Fair article here
