LBTOUNY Ready To Keep TNCs Out of Upstate New York

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Although the New York state legislature didn’t act on a proposed bill in 2016 that would have allowed TNCs to operate in update New York, the Limousine, Bus, Taxi Operators of Upstate New York (LBTOUNY) know the fight  will continue when the legislature reconvenes in its next session.

LBTOUNY President Kevin Barwell (Giorgio’s Limousine, Buffalo) told members gathered at a summer association outing at Coco-Cola Field on Aug. 13 that “both sides are preparing for upcoming meetings in Albany to ensure the TNCs don’t skirt established rules and regulations that are subject to the limousine industry.”

Pointing out Uber has some 10 lobbyists working state lawmakers to sway the bill in their favor, Barwell asked members to contribute what they can to fund their lobbying initiatives to counter the reported $1 million the TNCs have spent to expand upstate.

“It’s an ongoing fight that doesn’t stop if we want to ensure there is a level playing field,” Barwell said. “We know our representatives can be swayed to include fingerprinting as part of background checks and commercial insurance for TNCs.”

The LBTOUNY meeting was sponsored by Towne Livery as part of a festive two-day event that featured a gala unveiling of the 2017 Lincoln Continental at Shea’s Performing Arts Center in downtown Buffalo and a ride-‘n-drive for members the following day, followed by the association meeting and minor league baseball game at Coca-Cola Field.
