Cleaning Computers Can Avoid Long-Term Hassles

You may do spring and fall cleanings, but chances are your computers get skipped except for a cursory wipe down of the monitors. Computers, like any other piece of equipment or machinery, need to be cleaned inside and out periodically.

Cleaning The Inside

Computers are dust magnets. They suck dust into their internal components, which can act as insulation that traps heat. The circuit boards that dwell inside your computer don’t like heat, which can cut short your computer life. All you need to clean your computer inside is a can of compressed air and a Phillips screwdriver. You can get canned air at Staple’s, Office Depot, and even the grocery store. Before we begin, shut your computer down, turn it off, and unplug the power cord.

Remove the Cabinet Cover

Most covers are held in place by four screws on the backside of your computer. Some models may have them on the side. Remove these screws and slide the cover towards you while facing the front. It will slide off easily. If it seems stuck, more screws may be holding it in place.

Blow It Out

Before you begin blowing out your computer, you should take it outside and put on a breathing mask to filter out impurities. The dirtiest area of your computer is the fan on the power supply. Spray the fan itself, making it spin. You’ll find it next to the power cord connection. Turn the computer on its side and blow out the internal cabinet. Don’t get the spray nozzle too close to the green circuit boards inside; just close enough to blow the dust out. Once you have completed this, place the cabinet cover back on and secure it with the screws. Reconnect the power cord and restart the computer for the next part of the tune-up.

Why You Need an Internal Clean Up

Your computer does a lot to learn your routines and make life easier for you. In the process of “learning,” a lot of information is stored and kept ready to be used at your fingertips. Every time you visit a website, your computer exchanges information with that site in the form of sharing “cookies.” Let’s say you visit our website, http://www.lctmag.com, to use for research. Your computer gives our computer a “cookie” which tells us a little about who you are. Our computer hands your computer a “cookie.” Think of our cookie being a file folder full of information that will now be laid upon your desk for fast retrieval of information without having to pull the file folder out of the cabinet. Once you have viewed 50 websites, your desk would have 50 folders on it. That needs a clean-up. You don’t want a bunch of clutter laying around. Those cookies and other tidbits of information pile up. This includes storing a record of every website you have visited, every file you have ever downloaded, and many other tiny fragments of information. This all slows your computer down over time.

How To Clean It Up

While you can manually clean your computer, there are many programs like System Mechanic ($40), MyCleanPC ($20), and AVG PC Tune Up ($40) that will quickly clear Internet cookies, browsing sites, your recycle bin, expired cookies, broken registry links, and many other cyber refuse that slows your computer. Once you have run a clean-up program, your computer will run lightning- fast again like the day you bought it.

Briana Candeub Promoted To Park Avenue VP of Operations

(l to r) Briana with her father and Park Avenue Limousine owner Alan Candeub.

TREVOSE, Pa. — After proving herself for four years at her father Alan Candeub’s company, eldest daughter Briana Candeub has been promoted to the position of Vice President of Operations at Park Avenue Limousine.

Her duties will include overseeing every aspect of day-to-day operations while ensuring dispatchers, reservationists, and chauffeurs are working together to provide the best service possible to clients.

“It means a lot to me. When I first came on board, my dad told me I wouldn’t have a title until I had earned it. Now that I have, I’m proud he feels I’ve made my mark and that I’m ready to help take the company to the next level,” she says.

Her long term goal is to assist in expanding the company from 50 to 60 vehicles to 80 to 100 vehicles, and she’d like to eventually run the business after her father retires.

“While I’m proud to be the owner’s daughter, I want people to know me for who I am as an individual. I haven’t been handed this title because of nepotism; I’ve worked hard and I’m extremely dedicated. If I have to be at the office by 9, I’ll be sure to be there at 8:50,” she jokes.

Briana also works alongside her siblings Chelsea, who works in the accounting department, and Chase, who in college, but works from school and in the summers and runs the fleet department.

Texas Operator Knows How To Stay Engaged To His Service

Rachid loves spending time with his wife, Fatima, and his daughter, Salma.

Who: Rachid Ben, owner of Aviation Limousine & Transportation, Houston

Customer service: Being flexible and prepared to do anything a customer or affiliate needs to keep them happy and comfortable is the best way to provide outstanding service, Ben says. “When dealing with affiliates, their rules are my rules. If they want their own chauffeurs to be onsite 20-30 minutes before a pickup, I make sure that’s how we do it, too.”

Biggest success: Ben credits his success to his wife, Fatima. “When I bought my second car, I didn’t have enough time to do everything and couldn’t run the business by myself. Without her, there’s no way I’d be where I am. I’m also so thankful for the staff I have. They are really flexible and more like family than employees.”

Start-up costs and methods: To drum up business, Ben went to all the hotels in the area and spoke to whoever was available about his services. He’d also put his business card on cars in the parking lot. These tactics worked, but not exactly as he expected. Ben then did research online and asked some friends about better ways to market. He soon discovered limo tradeshows and attended his first in Atlantic City. “I didn’t know anyone or have any business cards, but I met Tom Mazza, bought his book, and watched his videos,” he says.

Fast Facts

Location: Houston, Texas

Owner: Rachid Ben

Founded: 2008

Vehicle Type: sedans, SUVs, vans

Fleet Size: 12

Employees: 10

Revenues: N/A

Phone: (713) 378-5466

Marketing strategies: When the company started in 2008, Facebook wasn’t as good an option for advertising as it is today. Instead, he knocked on all possible doors, bought ads in Visit Houston magazine, and put 10% off ads on the back of grocery store receipts. This worked well for a while, but when social media started booming he advertised on websites.

Advice: Ben’s words of wisdom to other operators are to be honest and educate yourself. “If you don’t learn, your business will suffer for it. You can survive a few years, but not long after that,” he says. He used to write his trips in a notebook, and left it in his car once. The vehicle was stolen, and with it, his reservations for the next month. Before he went to shows, he didn’t know about the different available software that would ease his life as a business owner. “Do things the right way. People are looking for receipts, quotes, etc. and you have to be able to produce them fast. Invest in software, good insurance, and clean cars; go to every show you can, and make friends in the industry.”

Origins: Ben worked as a hotel doorman and was then employed by a limo company. There, he learned a lot about the industry. He started his own operation in March 2008 when he bought his first vehicle, a 2008 Lincoln Town Car. “I’ll never forget that day,” he says.

Future plans: Getting deeper into the Sprinter and bus markets are Ben’s next steps.

Lessons learned: Be flexible. “I don’t believe in the words ‘I can’t do it,’” Ben says. “Love what you do so you can do what you love; if you don’t love this business, you’re not going to go far.”

Free time: Ben loves being with his family. He also enjoys playing soccer two times a week to relieve stress. “It gives you energy to work more,” he says.

Up to 60% of fleets are still waiting to implement a solution, according to a recent industry report conducted by market research firm, CJ Driscoll & Associates. GPS Insight advises business owners and fleet managers not to wait any longer to implement an ELD solution. There are four major reasons why waiting will lead to a number of issues.

The GPS Insight Hours of Service Solution offers an accommodating alternative to paper logs that provides many benefits beyond compliance. Although it has a simple interface for both drivers and office personnel, GPS Insight understands this new mandate is a huge shift for the industry and is offering its customers unlimited hands-on training, augmented by on-demand training videos, to make the transition from paper logs to e-logs as seamless as possible.
