Red, White, Blue & New: It’s All About You

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – By the time the industry gathers for the next LCT East Show, America will have a President-Elect. What better place to make sense of election results and what they mean for the industry than at this fourth annual East Coast industry trade show, to be held Nov. 13-15 at Harrah’s Atlantic City.

In honor of the election year and U.S. patriotism, LCT-NLA Show East will carry the theme of “YOUnited We Stand!” LCT and its show partner, the National Limousine Association, are working on a practical, tools-you-can-use seminar series operators can apply to their services — in good times or bad.

LCT predicts regardless of who wins the Presidential election, the limousine industry has the grit to succeed in any political era. If it’s survived and adapted during the last four Presidential terms, it will make the most of the next four years. Taking that approach, LCT-NLA Show East hyper-focuses on those topics, trends, and tools that strengthen operations of all fleet sizes.

The East Coast Show, which moved last year to its new Harrah’s waterfront conference center location, proved more sociable than expected with its added emphasis on networking and mingling. That helps make this year’s show the first and only place industry businesspeople can gather to commiserate and/or celebrate after one of the most engaging and volatile election seasons in U.S. history.

LCT will be continuously updating the LCT-NLA Show East website at www.lcteast.com. Registration opens by June 1, with super early bird discounting available until Sept. 1, and early bird discounting until Oct. 21: Group discounts include 10% off the second person from a company, and 20% off the third person. NLA members get an added 10% discount overall. For East Coast attendees, Atlantic City provides an economical drive-to destination with free parking.

The 2015 LCT East Show drew 200 more attendees than projected, so if there ever was a time and place for industry operators and vendors to stay connected and united, this year’s show is it.

PRLA Supports $11.4 Million Fine Against Uber

“If you break the law you pay the fine/consequences.” -PRLA Director Anthony Onorata

HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Philadelphia Regional Limousine Association (PRLA) supports a record-setting $11.4 million fine against Uber that Pensylvania Gov. Tom Wolf and Pittsburgh-area officials want Pennsylvania regulators to greatly reduce.

The Public Utility Commission fined Uber last month for operating six months in 2014 without the required approval.

The company has said it would appeal and was “shocked” by the fine. Uber said no one was harmed and Pennsylvania has since approved its operation.

“Uber says ‘No one was harmed.’ Does that mean we don’t need auto insurance if there isn’t an accident? What kind of statement is that?” said PRLA Director, Anthony Onorata, (Anthony Limousine, Allentown). “If you break the law, you pay the fine/consequences.”

“The fine is relevant to the size and volume of work that comes throughout the state from Uber. Besides, the fine was already lowered from $50 million to $11.4 million. Bottom line — they must follow the current laws, rules and regulations.”

A bill is circulating through the state legislature that could give the green light to make TNCs legal statewide.

TNC Travesties Of The Week

How Uber Promotes Dangerously Tired Driving: Shortly after picking Inc. writer Jeff Bercovici up for an early-morning trip to the airport, his driver casually informed him he’d been on the road for more than 19 hours, with only one 90-minute break around midnight for a meal and a catnap. He was pulling the extra-long shift, he said, in hopes of earning an incentive payment for drivers who complete a certain number of trips in a week. (In the Bay Area, 100 trips in a week yields a bonus of $350; 120 trips is worth $500.) It was his last day to hit the target before the counter reset. Inc. article here

Uber’s Plan for World Domination – A Board of Political Heavyweights: In its early days, Travis Kalanick’s Uber was not in the business of making friends. The ride-hailing service seemed to revel in breaking noisily into new markets, inviting trouble from regulators as it expanded across the globe. But lately, the $51 billion company has shifted its strategy, courting representatives of the same entrenched interests it used to delight in disrupting. Vanity Fair article here

Uber Can’t Dodge Assault Lawsuit Because Of Contract Drivers: Uber drivers may legally be contractors rather than employees, but that doesn’t absolve the company of liability in assault cases. A federal judge in California has denied the ride-sharing company’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit for attacks against two riders. One of Uber’s main arguments was the drivers aren’t employees, so it isn’t responsible for his actions. However, the judge ruled “plaintiffs have alleged sufficient facts to claim plausibly an employment relationship exists.” Engadget article here

GM, Lyft Collaborating On Self-Driving Taxis

General Motors Co. and Lyft Inc. within a year will begin testing a fleet of self-driving Chevrolet Bolt electric taxis on public roads, a move central to the companies’ joint efforts to challenge Silicon Valley giants in the battle to reshape the auto industry.

The plan is being hatched a few months after GM invested $500 million in Lyft, a transportation network company whose services rival Uber Technologies Inc. The program will rely on technology being acquired as part of GM’s separate $1 billion planned purchase of San Francisco-based Cruise Automation Inc., a developer of autonomous vehicles technology.

Who’s Behind The Wheel Of Your Limo?

CHICAGO, IL — Limo rides are especially popular this time of year as students head to prom, but there’s something parents should know before booking the ride.

Close calls and deadly crashes reveal the potential danger about who may be behind the wheel.

Luxury and safety are what most people expect when they book a limousine; after all, you’re getting a professional driver. But not all companies obey regulations and it can take a tragedy to find that out.

Uber For Private Jets Shuts Down

BlackJet, an on-demand private jet service created by Uber co-founder and chairman Garrett Camp, today informed members it’s “abruptly” ceasing operations.

The Florida-based company was launched in 2012, with the financial backing of venture capital firms (including First Round Capital and CrunchFund), tech executives (including Mark Benioff and Matt Mullenweg) and celebrities (including Ashton Kutcher, Jay-Z, and Will Smith).

The idea was basically to be Uber for the jet-set, eventually settling into a membership model whereby people paid an annual fee in exchange for access to a network of private jets on which they could book seats. But there were numerous hiccups (including layoffs and a prior service suspension), largely due to capital constraints that seem to have persisted. During the reorganization, Camp was among those who moved on (and gave up his investment).

Global Air Travel Demand Growth Slowed In March

Global air travel demand rose 5.3% year over year in March, outpaced by a 5.9% increase in capacity, according to the International Air Transport Association.

Global demand for international flights was up 6.2%, and domestic demand rose 3.7%. Both metrics grew slower year over year in March than in the first two months of this year. “It is premature to say whether this marks the end of the recent very strong results,” IATA director general and CEO Tony Tyler said in a statement. “We do expect further stimulus in the form of network expansion and declines in travel costs. However, the wider economic backdrop remains subdued.”
