How Uber Promotes Dangerously Tired Driving: Shortly after picking Inc. writer Jeff Bercovici up for an early-morning trip to the airport, his driver casually informed him he’d been on the road for more than 19 hours, with only one 90-minute break around midnight for a meal and a catnap. He was pulling the extra-long shift, he said, in hopes of earning an incentive payment for drivers who complete a certain number of trips in a week. Uber’s Plan for World Domination – A Board of Political Heavyweights: In its early days, Travis Kalanick’s Uber was not in the business of making friends. The ride-hailing service seemed to revel in breaking noisily into new markets, inviting trouble from regulators as it expanded across the globe. Uber Can’t Dodge Assault Lawsuit Because Of Contract Drivers: Uber drivers may legally be contractors rather than employees, but that doesn’t absolve the company of liability in assault cases. A federal judge in California has denied the ride-sharing company’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit for attacks against two riders. One of Uber’s main arguments was the drivers aren’t employees, so it isn’t responsible for his actions. However, the judge ruled “plaintiffs have alleged sufficient facts to claim plausibly an employment relationship exists.” Engadget article here
