Florida Airport Throws Out Rules To Level The Field With TNCs

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Rather than changing with the times, Melbourne’s licensed taxi, limousine and shuttle companies are relying on government to keep regulatory barriers high and protect their businesses from app-based competitors like Uber, Lyft and Sidecar, City Hall officials believe.

Wendy Kleefisch, who owns Brevard Executive Limousine & Transportation in Indialantic, said the lack of complaints was evidence that Melbourne’s current system works. She asked council members to require Level II criminal background checks — which include fingerprinting — for Uber drivers. And, she called for increased fees for vehicle-per-hire permit applications and vehicle registration stickers.

“Regulation is working. We’re following the rules that are currently in place to keep the public safe. This is not an Uber vs. vehicle-per-hire. This is an issue of just keeping the public safe,” Kleefisch said.
