Florida Airport Throws Out Rules To Level The Field With TNCs

Wendy Kleefisch, owner of Brevard Executive Limousine & Transportation in Indialantic, says regulations are working because they keep the riding public safe.
MELBOURNE, Fla. — Rather than changing with the times, Melbourne’s licensed taxi, limousine and shuttle companies are relying on government to keep regulatory barriers high and protect their businesses from app-based competitors like Uber, Lyft and Sidecar, City Hall officials believe.

Wendy Kleefisch, who owns Brevard Executive Limousine & Transportation in Indialantic, said the lack of complaints was evidence that Melbourne’s current system works. She asked council members to require Level II criminal background checks — which include fingerprinting — for Uber drivers. And, she called for increased fees for vehicle-per-hire permit applications and vehicle registration stickers.

“Regulation is working. We’re following the rules that are currently in place to keep the public safe. This is not an Uber vs. vehicle-per-hire. This is an issue of just keeping the public safe,” Kleefisch said.

Uber Signs A Mapping Deal With TomTom

TomTom, a Dutch company best known for its mapping and navigation products, “has signed a global, multi-year agreement to provide maps and traffic data for the Uber driver app,” according to the companies’ statement. TomTom’s technology will help provide more accurate arrival time estimates and routes, and will be implemented in more than 300 cities around the world, presumably in all, or almost all, of Uber’s markets.

How To Excel With Chauffeur-Client Communication

Illinois Limo Group Seeks Restraining Order On TNC Law

Illinois Limousine Association is fighting back against an ordinance allowing TNCs to operate at Chicago airports, convention centers.

CHIACGO — Although the city has approved an ordinance that allows TNCs to operate at the airports and convention centers, the Illinois Limousine Association (ILA) hired legal counsel to request a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) against the city as soon as possible.

“Our industry needs to unite and make a stand. We stand to lose a large percentage of business in the very near future if these concessions are granted to the TNPs,” ILA President Tracy Raimer said.

“Our goal is to raise $75,000 for a TRO to immediately stop the City of Chicago from implementing the new ordinance. With advice of counsel we intend to pursue a class action lawsuit against the City of Chicago and its Mayor Rahm Emanuel for discrimination against the livery industry as well as the potential conflict of interest as his brother is a huge investor in UBER,” she added.

The deadline for public comment on the City of Chicago’s proposed TNP Rules is Nov. 16. See related Crain’s Chicago Business article.
