Caio Splices Value-Driven Niche In U.S. Marketplace

<p>(photos courtesy of Alliance Bus Group)</p>

In another sign of growing variety in the motorcoach market, Brazil-based Caio has steadily gained a slice of it as the builder marks 10 model years in the U.S.

One distinction for Caio is its lower price range for new 57-passenger buses at $400,000 and up. So far, it has sold about 100 of its motorcoaches to chauffeured and charter transportation operations.

“Caio market segments are charter transportation and limousine companies, colleges and universities; within the charter segment, our target customer would be someone looking to establish a stronger brand presence with a European-style vehicle at far less cost,” said Eugene Hotard, executive vice president of Atlanta-based Alliance Bus Group, the exclusive U.S. distributor for Caio.

Alliance took over the distributorship in 2012, four years after Caio officially entered the U.S. motorcoach market. Alliance sells 1,800 to 2,500 buses and vehicles under multiple brands per year to 15 ground transportation segments. It has locations in Dallas, New Orleans, Orlando, Fla., Carlstadt, N.J., Hudson, N.H., and a sales office in Jackson, Miss. Caio, founded in 1946, builds its buses at a factory in Botucatu, Brazil, about 140 miles northwest of Sao Paulo.

A network of 130 U.S. Freightliner dealerships are equipped to service Caio motorcoaches, which are built with the Freightliner power module that includes the axles, suspension system, engine, transmission, and steering. The diesel engines are DD13 with Allison B500 transmissions and ZF independent suspension and tag axles. I-Steer passive steering allows for a 53-foot turning radius that reduces tire wear.

“For the limo operator wanting to get into motorcoaches, we have a unique brand that will set them apart and offer all the features their clients are demanding, and at a lower purchase price and operating cost because of the low proprietary parts content,” Hotard says.

Alliance sells two primary Caio model lines — G Series and S Series — to the chauffeured and charter bus transportation industries. The key difference in the lines, both monocoque constructed, is based on exterior styling. Starting with the 2016 MY, stainless steel frames became optional and will be standard with the 2018 MY.

Hotard claims Caio buses come with the same standard and/or optional amenities as competitors. “We offer what we believe is a superior curb appeal styling and ride quality thanks in part to Freightliner and ZF components,” he says.

“At every use, we have a fresh water flush and a waste tank sealed off from the restroom,” Hotard says. “It does an 80% better job of containing odor than the typical port-o-let bathroom in a motorcoach.”

Besides the Freightliner module, Caio buses include A/C systems from MCC and TransAir; wheelchair lifts made by Braun; REI A/V systems; Hehr side passenger windows; Velvac mirrors; and lighting from Hella and Grote.

“We’ve analyzed the buses based on Buy America criteria, which is what public transit uses, and we meet the 60% U.S. content standard,” Hotard says. “That helps with parts availability and competitive pricing. The bus does not have a high content of proprietary parts, which means you can get most parts directly from U.S. manufacturers.”

All the U.S. made parts are sent to Brazil for integration and then Caio ships the completed buses to the Port of Galveston in Texas.

Ford Takes Cautious Approach With Driverless Research

<p><span class="caption-text">A self-driving car at Ford&rsquo;s campus in Dearborn, Mich. It uses radar and lidar, a kind of radar using laser beams, to identify obstacles.</span>&nbsp;(<span class="credit"><span class="visually-hidden">Credit:&nbsp;</span>FORD via New York Times)</span></p>Ford Motor Co., which on Sept. 12 demonstrated its own approach to self-driving vehicles, said it was convinced by its decade of research to take a go-slow approach.

The manufacturer plans to introduce self-driving cars in a controlled urban environment within five years, capable of functioning as robotic taxis at slow, stop-and-go speeds in settings with traffic-light predictability.

The company provided the first public demonstration of the fleet of self-driving cars it is building at its sprawling engineering campus about 10 miles west of Detroit. Ford allowed reporters, analysts and other guests to take a ride in some of the 10 white Fusion sedans it has outfitted so far with tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of radar; lidar (a kind of radar based on laser beams); cameras; computer chips and other gear.

Cheap Airfares To Power Corporate Travel Growth

<p><a href="http://ift.tt/29oX37z">Photo via PEXELS</a></p>So far, 2016 has been a mixed bag for corporate travel.

The strength of the U.S. dollar, along with terror fears and a stagnant global economy, led many international companies to reduce their travel spend. Mediocre economic growth in Europe and South America also contributed to the malaise.

Yet, emerging markets are expected to continue their business travel growth as business travel remains cheap, according to Advito’s 2017 industry forecast report.

Behind The Wheel Of Uber’s Self-Driving Car

<p><a href="http://ift.tt/2cMKiDU">Photo via Uber Newsroom</a></p>For now, two Uber employees will accompany every trip to monitor the car’s self-driving capabilities — one behind the wheel, and the other in the passenger seat with a laptop displaying the data and images gathered by the car’s sensors. Uber’s ultimate goal, though, is enabling customers to summon a car on demand with nobody in it.

The company says it plans to gather feedback from customers who opt into the trial and use it to make decisions about how to expand its self-driving program. It’s just a test run, but it marks the first time self-driving cars are being deployed in a ride-hailing capacity.

Operator Appreciates Affiliates Involved In Associations

<p>(R to L) Nicole Feely, director of sales and marketing for Earth Limos &amp; Buses in Las Vegas, with&nbsp;husband and owner of the company Lou Castro</p>LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Since 2007, Earth Limos & Buses has been providing top-notch limo service around-the-clock. The company’s LCT Connect profile states it specializes in affiliate relations, and offers newer model vehicles detailed twice daily by an on-site crew.

From uniformed chauffeurs who are drug and alcohol screened with thorough FBI background checks to dispatchers who track all vehicles in real-time, the company is more than ready to handle out-of-town clients.

Nicole Feely, director of sales and marketing, said farm-ins make up about 90% of their affiliate work, while farm-outs comprise about 10%. “Our chauffeurs are specifically trained on how to properly handle affiliate work. They never hand out any of our branded materials and make sure to authorize extensions of trips through the affiliate company.”

Her best piece of advice for handling affiliate work is to realize the importance of keeping lines of communication open. “In this business, things happen that are out of your control from time to time, and I think when you really communicate the reality of the situation, it’s received so much better by the affiliate. It’s really important to be honest.”

LCT CONNECT PROFILE HERE

One of the changes Feely sees in affiliating is how companies are upping their service game to compete with TNCs. “What we are offering people is an experience, not just transportation. They can get transportation with a TNC. We have to show we are a better choice in every single aspect,” she explained.

“As luxury ground transportation companies, we’ve all had to go back and really revisit what that looks like. I believe the presence of TNCs has pushed us to become better service providers.”

Earth Limos & Buses decided to sign up for LCT Connect because it wants to support other businesses that understand the importance of supporting the NLA, Feely said.

“We want to work with other businesses that understand the value in attending the Shows and networking with like-minded operators. It’s my hope that LCT Connect will allow us to forge new relationships with other companies across the globe that we might not always be able to meet at the Shows.”

Feely’s husband and owner of the company, Lou Castro, knows a thing or two about supporting the industry: He formed the Nevada Bus and Limousine Association (NBLA) in Las Vegas about three years ago and looks forward to developing relationships with other local associations as well.

If you are looking for an affiliate who will treat you right, Feely said, “Look no further; we will be an extension of your brand.”
