New Jersey Senate Holds Up TNC Bill Over Fingerprinting Issue

New Jersey State House in Trenton.
TRENTON, N.J. — A Senate bill that would regulate app-based transportation network companies (TNCs) in New Jersey hit a speed bump this week after several lawmakers objected to the firms’ resistance to fingerprinting their drivers.

Representatives of New Jersey-based taxi and limousine services have demanded fingerprints are part of the background search, just as they are for their drivers.

Jason Sharenow, president of the Limousine Association of New Jersey, welcomed the delay of the bill. Sharenow noted Uber has agreed to fingerprint background checks in New York City. “These are sensible regulations that provide much needed passenger safety protection,” he said.

More Than Half of SF Residents Don’t Use TNCs

Ride-hail companies like Uber and Lyft may seem more prevalent than ever in San Francisco, but more than half of city residents don’t use such vehicles for transportation.

That’s according to survey data conducted last year, but released this week, by the City Controller’s Office, which found nearly 60 percent of San Francisco residents have never taken an Uber, Lyft or another ride-hail.

Welcome To The World Of Bleisure

The blur and whirl of business travel: Any time for leisure?
Business travel was never designed to be fun. Often you find yourself rushing to an airport, getting off in another city, jumping in a cab, going to a hotel, meeting in the hotel’s conference room, jumping back in a cab, and the next thing you know you are sitting in the office. You may have just visited one of the most beautiful, culture-rich cities in the world and never even knew it.

But times are changing. Many people who need to travel on business are becoming “bleisure” travelers, a term used to define professionals who mix vacation, or leisure, time with business.

Private Jet Company Boasts Increase In First-Time Charters

On-demand private jet charter company Victor has posted an increase in bookings during the first four months of 2016, 34% of which were from customers who had never flown a private plane before.

Victor, which operates in the United States and internationally, attributes the growth in first-time charters to its iOS app, through which customers can compare and book jets instantly. The app accounts for 60% of the company’s total bookings.

Tree House Vacations: The Next Big Thing

Members of the global luxury travel industry looked into the future of travel and saw tree houses, “experience leave” from work and Airbnb-style accommodations with hotel amenities.

Those ideas and more were part of the industry’s first “unconference,” a TED Talk-style model with rotating speakers that was the centerpiece of the annual convention LE Miami, which brings together boutique hoteliers and luxury travel suppliers.

Domestic Business Travel Rises After Year-Long Slump

U.S. domestic business travel grew in April, according to the U.S. Travel Association’s Travel Trends Index. After tracking below 50 on the index, indicating year-over-year decline, for 13 months, domestic business travel measured 51.7 in April, signaling year-over-year growth.

It’s a bright spot in an otherwise gray year but expected to be short lived, according to the USTA. The six-month Leading Travel Index, which forecasts the likely average pace and direction of travel volume over the same period the prior year, shows business travel languishing at 49.6.

Travel Apps Combine Human Intelligence, Mobile Tech

Booking travel feels old-school, no matter how you spin it: Such sites as Expedia and Orbitz have barely updated their layouts since 1999, and dialing a travel agent hardly feels appropriate in the age of Uber.

That’s about to change, thanks to a series of disruptive travel services that are blending human intelligence with mobile technology. The goal: striking a middle ground in an industry where the personal touch still means something, but the bottom-line savings of D.I.Y. tech is hard to beat.

Kentucky Operator Booked For Muhammad Ali Funeral

Jaco Limousine & Transport has 28 vehicles in its rental fleet, mostly vans and SUVs. But if you want one of the luxury sedans for use June 10, you are too late. The entire fleet has already been rented with nearly all leased to out-of-towners coming in for the funeral of Muhammad Ali.

“Most of them are going to the funeral,” owner Todd Roberts said. “I can’t say who I have rented to, but most of them are VIPs who specifically said they are going to the funeral.”

Several other providers of limos reported similar brisk activity in advance of the funeral of perhaps the world’s most recognizable figure — Louisville native and icon, boxing legend and humanitarian extraordinaire, Ali.
