Why It Will Take A Lot To Kill Uber

Uber may have booted CEO Travis Kalanick, but the company shows enormous staying power. By the way, he may be trying to come back. (Flickr.com Creative Commons image by Helsenberg Media)

Although it’s been repeatedly shooting itself in the foot, Uber holds a commanding share of what is still a growing market. That’s partly because of its business type: a platform that connects customers with providers. Once you’ve got a critical mass of both signed up, it can be pretty hard to unseat you.

Generation Clash Or Collaboration?

I’m proud to be a part of a magazine that understands the importance of embracing Millennials in the workplace. This is LCT’s first-ever Fast 40 themed issue, and it was one of the most exciting I’ve worked on so far. The thought of so many successful operators under 40 years old looking to improve and contribute to the industry should inspire anybody, regardless of age.

We constantly see headlines like “How Millennials Lack Of Manners Is Killing Class,” “Millennials: The Me Me Me Generation,” and, my personal favorite, “Millionaire to Millennials: Stop Buying Avocado Toast If You Want To Buy A Home.” To group everyone in this age cohort together this way is unfair and inaccurate.

However, I’m sure a minor slice of my generation lacks motivation, dislikes doing certain things the traditional way, and lacks social finesse, just like in any other generation. No one is perfect, but we do need to prove we can walk the talk (or perhaps hoverboard the talk?) if we are going to say, “But we’re not all like that.”

If you’re going to spend eight (or likely more if you’re in this business!) hours a day together, it’s important to throw generational differences to the wayside and learn and laugh with each other.

What follows are some points I believe will benefit everyone from Millennials to Baby Boomers. No matter your age, it’s all about respect — and no one should be deprived of the chance to give or receive it.

Prove Stereotypes Wrong

I think one of the most unfair assumptions made about Millennials is we’re all lazy and entitled. Let’s be real: I don’t care who you are, nobody likes activities that involve manual labor like washing vehicles, taking out trash, or making sure bathrooms are clean. Millennials are on track to become the most educated generation to date (according to the Pew Research Center), and want to use their knowledge.

Something to clarify on company culture: Nothing is above anyone — period. Operators of all skill and experience levels should instill this concept with their staff. It doesn’t matter how old, educated, or accomplished you are; everyone should be willing to do what’s needed to keep a business in working order.

Great ideas are born when experience meets innovation. Generation gap or not, respectful collaboration breeds success both sides can be proud of.

Coworkers, Friends, or Both?

It’s been argued being constantly connected to our smartphones, tablets, and other digital devices has made Millennials, and our up-and-coming cohorts Gen Z, anti-social. In reality, I’d argue this has made us more social than ever. We’re now able to connect with friends and family whether they are in the kitchen or across the world.

Social media allows us to express ourselves, and gives the people who have added us to their personal networks the ability to see what we’re like outside of office walls (which can be both a good and bad thing…but I digress).

Millennials, swallow your pride and do your best no matter the task. Older operators and entrepreneurs, lead by example.

We often see the phrase “work-life balance” appear in countless numbers of business articles, and how important it is to all people who work for a living. But does this mean life can’t blend with work? In other words, why can’t we form real connections with the people we see more than our own family and consider them friends as well?

Operator Matt Shafik of Genesis Limo in Houston, Texas says, “Improving relationships has nothing to do with age. Keep trying to make a connection, but make sure you’re doing it for genuine reasons and not self-gain and it will work out. Try and find some common ground.”

People in positions of power need to understand that at times they might not always be right. In a world constantly changing and being disrupted, you have to hear your subordinates out. They likely know more about technology than you do, and therefore are a great asset to the future of your business.

In turn, Millennials and younger professionals must be respectful about voicing what they believe are the right moves to make to keep the company afloat. Contrary to popular belief, we don’t know it all, and we need to realize that.

Vendors Turned Operators Attracted To Industry Kindness

(l to r) Ray Gavino and Devo Bavishi

CLEVELAND, Ohio — When operators are asked how they started out, you often hear an answer along the lines of, “It all started at my first LCT Show.” Ray Gavino and his business partner Devo Bavishi of Translogic Tech and Translogic Executive have a similar story, but from the viewpoints of industry vendors and operators.

Easy Transition

Bavishi was already working in the taxi and Super Shuttle world, and attended a lot of different conferences with Gavino. They’d see tons of products, which got them thinking about what they could create that the industry needed. Since they couldn’t find what they were looking for in a vehicle camera anywhere else, they researched and started to design one. After brainstorming the features and functions they wanted, they hired a firm to help them build it.

About seven years ago, they started going to limo trade shows to sell the product and got to meet many of the big industry players. “When I saw how passionate everyone was, it was really inspiring,” Gavino says. Because the pair already worked as a transportation vendor and got to know so many operators, Gavino realized if they started a limo company their affiliate network would be instant.

“The chauffeured car industry is totally different than what we were used to, but it makes sense,” Bavishi says. “Not everyone has all the units they need, so it’s a good thing to connect with individual operators in all of these cities. Everybody makes money and everybody wins. It didn’t make sense for us to limit ourselves.”

Fast Facts

Location: Cleveland, Ohio

Owner: Ray Gavino and Devo Bavishi

Founded:Translogic Executive 2017; Translogic Tech 2009

Vehicle Type: Sedans, SUVs, Shuttles

Fleet Size: 10

Employees: 15

Phone: (866) 959-3226

Although their chauffeured business, Translogic Executive, is still in its early stages, the company has succeeded. During the basketball playoffs in Cleveland, many operators reached out for affiliate work. “We were sold out the whole week because of the network we had created, and we didn’t even have a website at the time,” Gavino says.

Hard Truths

Running a chauffeured transportation company wasn’t as easy as it may have seemed. “People think they can just up and start a business, but there are a lot of things that happen in the background you’re not aware of until you start your own,” Gavino says. You have to get the required permits, develop and understand safety precautions, vet your chauffeurs, and ensure your vehicles are up to date and frequently brought in for preventative maintenance — the side many of the outsiders looking in don’t see.

“If you have one vehicle or 100, it’s going to be difficult. You have to stay proactive, because if you don’t, you’ll lose clients. It doesn’t matter if you have nice cars if they break down and make a client late; they’ll share that information with everyone else.”

The company runs 10 vehicles, including Cadillac Escalades and XTS and Lincoln MKS and MKTs. They have a few corporate contracts, and want to increase that client market. While not opposed to retail, they would like to designate specific managers for different types of clientele as they grow.

A Unique Industry

Gavino says the limo world is so different than any other industry because operators frequently get help from their competitors. “In other fields, you’re on your own,” he says. “My mind was blown at my first LCT Show. I couldn’t believe how even though operators work in the same region or city, they still help each other succeed.”

His advice for other operators, besides attending tradeshows, is be prepared for everything and don’t be afraid to mess up sometimes. “My father always said ‘If you never try, you’ll never know.’ If you try and fail, that’s how you learn.”

Being open to work with your competitors isn’t a bad thing, Bavishi says. If anything, it’ll help you succeed. “At first you ask yourself, ‘do I want to share my business with someone else?’ But we just recently moved over 2,000 people, and we could not have done that on our own. Networking helped us accomplish that, and it opens up future opportunities as well.”

Although the business is still young, Gavino likes how he and Bavishi are running it and is thankful for helpful colleagues. “They are the main core of our success and how we are able to keep moving forward.”

Daimler Invests Major Stake In Blacklane Limo Service App

Blacklane’s fixed, all-inclusive rates offer rides in premium luxury black vehicles that cost a fraction of legacy limousine service prices.
BERLIN – Global professional driver service Blacklane has raised the largest investment in its history, the company said Aug. 1. Daimler AG, through subsidiary Daimler Mobility Services GmbH, led the two-digit million euro Series C round. Existing investors RI Digital Ventures, b-to-v and Alstin also joined the round.

Daimler already invested in Blacklane in 2013, becoming its first strategic partner.
Blacklane will use the money to:

 • Accelerate global expansion, especially in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions. Blacklane will add dozens of new cities this year. Today, the company serves over 200 cities and 400 airports in 50 countries.
 • Continue to enhance passenger and driver apps, its API, and portals for corporations and driver partners.
 • Integrate with more distribution partners in the travel industry.
 • Develop additional services, including new vehicle classes.
 • Grow the team at its Berlin headquarters and beyond to manage its global operation.

Blacklane Modernizes Outdated Market
Blacklane redefined the professional driver industry with a global footprint, consistently high quality, and customer-friendly policies. The company closes the missing link in the travel chain, the first and last miles of a trip.

Travelers book guaranteed rides with only commercially licensed and insured drivers. Due to its smart dispatching technology, Blacklane’s fixed, all-inclusive rates cost a fraction of legacy limousine service prices. The service includes 24/7 multilingual customer service and end-to-end real-time service control. Airport and train station pickups include driver meet-and-greet service and one hour of driver wait time.

Travelers book Blacklane directly on its website or apps, or with blue-chip partners such as Amadeus, Booking.com, Expedia, Lufthansa, Sabre’s TripCase, and TripAdvisor’s Viator.

Local professional driver companies grow their revenues without new costs. They add Blacklane’s global customers to their local business, taking as few or many rides as they choose. Drivers know their exact rates before they accept rides from Blacklane’s advanced dispatching platform.

“In the past, professional driver services were expensive, inconsistent and difficult to book,” said Jens Wohltorf, CEO and co-founder of Blacklane. “But Blacklane has made them affordable, accessible, and reliable worldwide, while upholding the industry’s safety and quality standards. With the additional strategic and financial support in place, we will bring even more innovation to our global passengers and drivers in the months and years ahead.”

Klaus Entenmann, Chairman of Daimler Financial Services, said, “We want to offer flexible and innovative mobility services to our customers. Our investment in Blacklane as a global professional driver service is an important part of this strategy. In recent years, we at Daimler Financial Services developed our mobility services and platforms, in which we invested close to €500 million.”

About Blacklane
Blacklane connects passengers with the spare capacities of licensed, regulated and insured professional drivers and chauffeurs. Corporate and individual customers can book and schedule rides in over 50 countries around the world. Blacklane guarantees low and all-inclusive fixed rates at the time of the booking with a unique pricing and dispatching algorithm. The company provides a consistently high global standard by combining multi-lingual 24/7 customer care with real-time service control for tens of thousands of quality cars.

About Daimler Financial Services
Daimler Financial Services is the Daimler Group’s global provider of financial services and offers a variety of innovative mobility services. It is the world’s leading provider of free-floating car sharing with its car2go brand. Most recently, it was announced that mytaxi will merge with the UK-based provider Hailo to become the leading taxi app in Europe, after the regulatory approvals. Daimler Financial Services develops intermodal mobility solutions for cities with its brand moovel. Mobility services, such as these, provide a foundation for the future of autonomous driving.

Among the few changes to the 2017 Cadillac CT6 is the introduction of a new livery package. Assigned production code ZR3, the package includes only one feature — a complimentary 36 month/150,000 mile Professional Vehicle Protection Plan (PVPP).

The ZR3 livery package option is available only on CT6es equipped with the turbo-charged 2.0L LTG and naturally-aspirated 3.6L LGX engines; it is not available with the twin-turbo 3.0L V6 LGW, which — at the present time — is the highest-output motor in the full-size sport-luxury sedan.

Cadillac CT6 Takes Driverless Comparison Test

The rise of autonomous vehicles has been upon us for over a decade. It was small, baby steps at first, but we’ve now approached a time where, theoretically, some vehicles are capable of driving themselves for lengthy periods of time with human supervision.

This meant it was time for Motor Trend to take a few of automakers’ most recent forays into semi-autonomous driving and understand which systems worked best, and how each system differed. It’s relevant here because the publication also included a 2016 Cadillac CT6.

2017 Lincoln Continental Ready Before Year Ends

Lincoln’s 2017 Continental mid-size sedan created such a stir with its non-traditional door handles, an uncluttered side panel and a low-key look. However, it will still demand attention, especially when it first arrives in showrooms before 2016 ends.
