Blacklane Rewards Chauffeurs With Bonus Program

A team of chauffeurs for Blacklane’s service in Tampa, Fla.
BERLIN — Chauffeurs for Blacklane can double their bonuses as a reward for sustained high quality. Blacklane expanded its Partner Prestige Club to its 230+ cities in 51 countries as of Oct. 1.

All Blacklane driver partners are automatically eligible based on performance and number of rides they choose to accept. The Partner Prestige Club builds upon Blacklane’s quality-based bonus program. Professional driver companies earn a monthly bonus based on criteria such as ride volume and excellent passenger ratings.

Going forward, companies that sustain these results for at least three consecutive months will receive a larger monthly quality bonus. For qualifying companies, the quality bonus increases by 10% after three months and 30% after six months. It doubles after one year. In addition, members of the Partner Prestige Club become preferred partners for Blacklane’s event and V.I.P. business.

Partner Prestige Club Level Duration of High Quality Quality Bonus Increase
Silver 3 months 10%
Gold 6 months 30%
Black 12 months 100%

Blacklane began the Partner Prestige Club in June across Europe and parts of the Middle East. Dozens of companies achieved the Silver bonus in the program’s first three months.

One London-based company commented, “We have chosen to work with Blacklane because of its professionalism. We are very happy to see the Partner Prestige Club explicitly acknowledges our professional understanding and our performance. We take pride in what we do and we aim at only delivering top quality to the customer.”

“We value our global network of professional drivers,” said Jens Wohltorf, CEO and co-founder of Blacklane. “Our driver partners are the face of Blacklane to passengers on every trip. We want to reward those who provide the best service each and every time so we can continue to grow together.”

Aston Martin Aims To Rival Tesla

Photo via Aston Martin
The UK-based Aston Martin has teamed up with Chinese technology company LeEco to bring an electric sedan, the Aston Martin RapidE to market in 2018.

Andy Palmer, chief executive of Aston Martin, points out rivals Ferrari, Bentley and Rolls-Royce have failed to bring a fully-fledged EV model to the market, paving the way for Aston Martin “to be a trailblazer in luxury electrics.”

And when it comes to Tesla’s Model S, Palmer claims the RapidE is in a league of its own. “I would argue Tesla fits in the premium market, competing with the likes of BMW and Mercedes. Aston sits above that.”

How Uber Plans To Reach The Commuter Burbs

Photo via Flickr (Mighty Travels)
SUMMIT, N.J. — This bedroom community to New York City will begin subsidizing Uber rides for residents traveling to and from the local train station starting Oct. 3 — a move the town initiated to avoid building a new parking lot, a multimillion-dollar effort.

For Uber, the partnership is another step in a series of strategic moves to extend its reach to the suburbs.

New Jersey Bus App Shaves Hour Off Manhattan Commute

Photo via Mike Virdi, OurBus
He stood at his bus stop with a pen and a pad asking fellow commuters if they’d be interested in a direct ride to their New York City destinations — rather than making multiple stops before finally arriving at the Port Authority just to grab a cab or subway.

Almost immediately, Princeton resident Mike Virdi knew he had a good idea brewing.

In May he helped launch OurBus, giving New Jersey commuters a new option to get to and from NYC. It’s like Uber, only these rides come on a luxury coach bus, equipped with wireless internet access, charging stations and restrooms.

Boeing 787 Penthouse Is The New Playboy Jet

Photo courtesy of Kestrel Aviation Management
Ordinarily Boeing 787 Dreamliners serve as commercial aircraft that carry between 240 and 335 passengers — but this one has been transformed into a 40-passenger private jet so spacious and well-equipped that it resembles an airborne penthouse apartment.

Developed by Kestrel Aviation Management, an American aviation asset manager that specialises in airliner and corporate aircraft acquisition, sale, modification and financing, this one-of-a-kind Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) has been dubbed the Dreamjet. The privileged few who get to step aboard can expect an in-flight experience worlds away from that offered on a typical Boeing.

Operator Knows Slow & Steady Wins Long Term

Operator Justin Farquhar with his wife, Amy, who handles reservations.
Biggest success: My Cloud Limo started with owner and president Justin Farquhar and his father driving. He’s very proud of how far they’ve come since then. “We worked many mornings, days, and nights on weekends getting home at two or three in the morning, and now we have nine part-time chauffeurs that work for us.” The fact he’s gone from one Lincoln Town Car, to newer stretch Hummers and a party bus is something he’s never dreamed of. “I was expecting to have one limousine just to make a little bit of extra money, and the next thing I know I have a full blown business.”

Clientele: My Cloud Limo provides transportation services for weddings and quinceaƱeras, but they also have a contract with the local casino. “When their VIP members come in, we take them to other casino locations, concerts, or sporting events,” Farquhar says. In addition, local bars bring bands into town every weekend, and the company picks them up, and takes them to their hotels or to get food.

Fast Facts

Location: Fort Smith, Ark.

Owner: Justin Farquhar

Founded: 2012

Vehicle types: Stretch Hummers, Dodge Charger, and Party Bus

Fleet size: 4

Employees: 10

Annual revenue: $150,000

Website: http://mycloudlimo.com/

Phone: (479) 582-5466

Start-up costs and methods: When launching his business, Farquhar figured it would be best to consult someone who knew what they were talking about. Federal Coach used to have a location where it built limousines in his city, and he knew many of its workers, including his father. After connecting with them, Farquhar took his first limo to his friend’s shop and learned how to build on to and repair it. His first vehicle was an eight passenger 2001 stretch Lincoln Town Car he bought for $4,500, which after repairs, cost $7,000.

Marketing strategies: Farquhar only recently started advertising. Word of mouth kept him busy for the first two and a half years. “My wife and I sat down and decided it was time to take things to the next level. We want to grow the business more, so we hired a friend of ours who works in online advertising. He ensured we pop up as the first company in our area when we are Googled.” He’s also bartered deals with local radio stations where he provides rides for contest winners in exchange for advertising on their show.

Customer Service: “My wife handles all of our reservations, and she’s always happy and has an outgoing personality.” Farquhar says. “I’ve gotten a lot of feedback from customers who say whenever they call and talk to her, it’s one of the main reasons they book.” If any issues arise during runs, he tries to improve the experience. “We haven’t had many. I can probably count them on one hand, but we always want that customer to come back.” For example, if the client is unhpapy with their experience, Farquhar will offer to comp them the ride and provide another for free. “That’s worked quite well for us. We do our best to make sure the client is satisfied before we drop them off.”

Lessons learned: Know what to look for and expect when buying a used vehicle. “There’s more to a limo than just the outside. Take a look at the electrical work that’s been done, and make sure nothing’s been tampered with. A lot depends on where it has been as well. Vehicles [in the northern part of Arkansas] get road salt, and can start to rust.” He also has a better understanding of what it means to provide excellent customer service. “The client wants the best experience, so we try to go above and beyond the call of duty,” he says.

Origins: Farquhar used to buy and sell cars as a part-time job, and he came across a limo as he was looking at cars online. He first considered buying it to make a little extra money each month. “Of course, my wife thought I was crazy, but she said it would be OK if I could find one for under $5,000.” Sure enough, he found one for $8,000, drove three hours, looked it over, and was able to talk the seller down to $4,500.

Advice: “Always start small. Take baby steps and don’t run out and get yourself into hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. Each year we’ve progressed, made more money, and bought newer limos.”

Future plans: Farquhar went to the 2016 International LCT Show and saw some newer vehicles on exhibit that really interested him. “In the near future, we’d like to purchase a Sprinter.” As far as growth goes, he’s comfortable with the rate at which My Cloud Limo has progressed. “We want to stay at this level,” he says.

Google Building A “Selfless” Kind Of Driver

Photo via Google Self-Driving Car Project
Google — which has been working on its self-driving cars since 2009 — is not in the car-making business. Nope, Google is in the superhuman-driver-making business, according to Dmitri Dolgov, the company’s head of self-driving technology.

Driving is a social activity, Dolgov told Recode during a live walk-through of the technology on Google’s self-driving car. That means the car has to not only be able to detect and recognize humans and other objects, it also has to be able to interact with, understand, and react to their behavior.
