Beware: U.S. Airport Taxi Rides Cost Far More Than Fares

Click to enlarge (Source: Blacklane; graphic modified by LCT for online dimensions)
BERLIN — Taxi costs from the 30 busiest U.S. airports to downtowns are 26% higher than base fares, according to new Blacklane research. Extras in New York/New Jersey, Las Vegas, Boston, Washington and Detroit push prices up at least 35%. The charges include tips, airport pickup fees, rush hour surcharges, and toll roads.

“Local regulations make it next to impossible to know how much taxis will cost. Travelers and corporate travel managers cannot budget for the full prices in advance,” said Jens Wohltorf, CEO and co-founder of Blacklane. “Price certainty reduces the stress of travel. That’s why we have shown all-inclusive fares since day one.”

Taxi rides from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Manhattan add more than 50% to the base fare. While fares range from $50 to $70, extras cost over $30. These include a $5 surcharge during peak hours, a $5.50 surcharge to use a credit card, a $12.50 bridge or tunnel toll, and tip.

All drivers and vehicles are commercially licensed and insured. Airport pickups include one hour of free wait time. Pickup times automatically adjust when flight arrival times change.

Travelers book rides an hour to months in advance in premium business-, first- and economy-class vehicles. Passengers receive their drivers’ contact information over text and email an hour before pick-up.

About Blacklane (blacklane.com): Blacklane connects passengers with the spare capacities of licensed, regulated, and insured professional drivers and chauffeurs. Corporate and individual customers can book and schedule rides in more than 50 countries worldwide. Mass. TNC Drivers Face Background Checks Sooner Than Expected

Dav El / BostonCoach CEO Scott Solombrino, pictured here Nov. 13 at an industry associations forum during LCT-NLA Show East, says despite the expanded Mass. background checks for TNC drivers, the fight for more thorough fingerprint checks is far from over (LCT file photo)
Drivers for Uber and Lyft in Massachusetts must pass a state-run background check by early April, sooner than expected, under a new agreement between the companies and Governor Charlie Baker’s administration.

The popular on-demand ride services already require their drivers to pass background checks conducted by third-party vendors before they can get on the road. But a law passed over the summer brought the state into the fold, requiring drivers to both pass the company check and one from the state.

Fingerprinting will continue to be a contentious issue. Scott Solombrino, CEO of Dav El / BostonCoach Chauffeured Transportation Network and a board director of the National Limousine Association, said the fight isn’t over. He expects to see legislation next year that would add the fingerprint check to the process.

“The state’s making an attempt to do the right thing based on how the law was written,” he said. “Good for the state, but it doesn’t change the fact we think there’s an even better system and it’s called fingerprinting.”

Taxi drivers are not required by state law to undergo fingerprinting, although they are in some cities, including Boston.

Solombrino said he wonders whether any current Uber drivers who passed the companies’ background checks will be forced off the road by the state’s check.

“That’s something we’ll know in the next six months: How many more people passed their background checks than passed the state’s review?” he said.

Jerry Robbins, Boston Operator, 1956-2016

Robbins received the inaugural People’s Choice Carla Boroday Humanitarian Award in October 2013 for his community service and acts of charity (LCT file poto)
HEMPSTEAD, N.H.— Longtime and noted New England operator Jerald “Jerry” Robbins, owner of Weldon Worldwide since 1999, died of a heart attack on Nov. 29. He was 60.

Services will be held Thursday, Dec. 1 at Goldman Funeral Chapel, 174 Ferry St., Malden, Mass., at 1:30 p.m. Interment is at Lebanon-Tifereth Israel Cemetery in Peabody, Mass. Condolence calls may be made following the interment at the home of Arthur and Linda Robbins until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to New Hampshire S.P.C.A., 104 Portsmouth Ave., Stratham, N.H. 03885.

A member of the New England Livery Association (NELA), Robbins launched Newton, Mass.-based Weldon Worldwide in February, 2000. Prior to that, he was chairman of the Weldon Group Inc., a mergers and acquisitions company from 1984 to 1998.

A charitable man, Robbins was the first recipient of the LCT People’s Choice Carla Boroday Humanitarian Award in October 2013.

Robbins won the award for his many charitable contributions. He had been involved for many years with the Boston-based Ellie Fund, which provides support services for patients undergoing treatment for breast cancer, including providing free transportation and fundraising.

He was also involved with the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation’s community initiative, “Heroes Among Us,” where at each Celtics home game an individual is honored for his or her contributions to the community. Robbins was on the board of directors for the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NHSPCA.)

Jerry Robbins receives a framed memento poster from Matt Meyersohn, the director of community relations and player development of the Boston Celtics' Heroes Among Us community outreach program in 2013 (LCT file photo)
Additionally, Robbins transported victims to and from medical appointments across the city and from the hospital to their homes once they had recovered fully. He provided transportation for a family member of a victim of the Boston Marathon bombing so he could have safe, reliable transportation to school while his family was recovering from their injuries and tending to their other child suffering from life-threatening injuries.

“I just feel it’s the right thing to do,” said Robbins at the time. “There are so many people that need transportation, that are going to have to go to hospitals daily. There’s one mother who’s got two sons with legs amputated at two different hospitals. There are just so many scenarios. I just think any company who does business in such a great community as Boston needs to step up and do the right thing.”

Beloved by many operators, friends, and affiliates throughout the industry, Robbins’ death has drawn numerous industry comments and memories on Facebook and social media channels.

Robbins is survived by his wife, Janet Brown-Robbins, and a brother, Arthur and his wife Linda Robbins.

Bill Could Change Insurance Rules For TNC Drivers

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — State lawmakers are moving a bill through subcommittees that could affect the way app-based companies like Uber and Lyft are insured.

The bill would require Transportation Network Companies to meet minimum insurance standards. Companies like Uber and Lyft already meet those requirements, but this bill codifies those standards and makes it official so that moving forward, all TNCs need to have the minimum coverage.

GCLA Tries Out New Format For Holiday Parties

The GCLA's winning board and officer team at the group's annual holiday event in December 2014.
NAPA / LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Greater California Livery Association faces a challenge common only to one other elongated state in the union: Florida. Both states stretch out into distinct northern and southern regions, most efficiently traversed from one end to the other by air.

This year, the GCLA has split its annual holiday parties and membership meetings between the classic North-South divide in 800-mile long California. The Northern event will be held Tuesday, Dec. 8 from 5:30-9 p.m. at Napa Ford Lincoln, 570 Soscal Ave. in Napa. The Southern event will be held Tuesday, Dec. 15 from 5:30-9 p.m at its usual spot at The Proud Bird restaurant, 11022 Aviation Blvd., near Los Angeles International Airport.

For operators, it either means a more convenient industry networking spot this holiday season, or two opportunities within one week. Both events will feature holiday-themed raffles and auctions of gifts and prizes donated by sponsors.

Highlights and presentations at the NorCal event include:

 • Napa Chamber of Commerce presentation.
 • Super Bowl 50 updates on transportation and parking logistics at airports.
 • Tips on how to market to increase your business from Gen X and Hispanic customers, provided by NBC Universal’s Telemundo 48.

Preceding the event, the GCLA will host a wine tasting, Monday, Dec. 7 at wineries in Calistoga and Napa Valley, @ $150 per person, and a golf game at 10 a.m. Dec. 8 at the Silverado Resort and Spa North Course, @ $150 per person.

Highlights and presentations at the SoCal event include:

 • Regulatory and legislative update from GCLA legislative supporter Rep. Adrin Nazarian, D-46th District, and GCLA lobbyist Gregg Cook.
 • Memorable words from the limousine industry’s fiery rhetorician Scott Solombrino, CEO of Dav El / BostonCoach Chauffeured Transportation Network and veteran board director of the National Limousine Association.
 • Results of 2016 GCLA board of director and officer elections.

Uber Setting Up Drivers With Rental Cars

The ride-share service is targeting potential drivers who either don’t have a car or whose car can’t be used under Uber’s standards — drivers’ cars must be in good condition and under 15 years old.

Uber already has a car leasing program that it runs in partnership with Xchange Leasing in a dozen major markets around the country.

How Best To Satisfy A Growing App-etite?

Apps were top of mind among attendees at LCT-NLA Show East, Nov. 8-10, as seen in these repeat demo sessions from iCars on the show floor.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — One my favorite challenges at each of our trade shows is trying to figure out the word on the street and the “big buzz” among operators and attendees. After four days at LCT-NLA Show East Nov. 7-10, I can only conclude that mobile apps are carrying the collective industry conversation.

I listened to animated discussions and had one-on-one chats about on-demand technology, app offerings, and how the limousine industry should compete in a service sector upended by transportation network companies (TNCs). Operators are thinking about and looking hard at the growing number of app providers pitching their products and services to the industry. How well operators embrace and tailor on-demand technology to their services will affect bottom lines and future success.

LCT Magazine remains neutral on app brands as we work our way through covering the open marketplace of contenders. Our goal is to ensure that individual operators are empowered to choose those technology vendors and services best suited to their unique businesses. Since asking lots of questions is one of my favorite pastimes, I’d like to devote this column to an evolving list every operator should ask and get answers to before signing up with app providers, or ones still to come.

Below is my game of 20+ Questions. I say “plus” because I couldn’t help myself and slipped in a few more questions under one number.

 1. Do you want on-demand or NEAR-demand, or both? From a service standpoint, how do you define on-demand versus near-demand in terms of minutes-hours timeframes?
 2. Does your business model and market area necessitate an on-demand or near-demand component?
 3. What are your goals for using and offering a mobile on/near-demand app?
 4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of: 1) Getting your own white label app, versus; 2) Using an in-house app via a software provider, versus; 3) Using an outside app-based network.
 5. What functionality does the app vendor have now? What are its plans for the next few months? What is the long term development plan?
 6. Does the vendor/company have enough funding, resources, staff, and infrastructure to grow and support a global deployment on a large scale?
 7. What is the owning structure of the app company and who are the primary investors?
 8. Does a vendor allow co-branding, i.e. your clients that you bring into the network see your brand/company name on the app wherever they travel?
 9. Does the app company forbid you via contract from doing business with other app providers?
 10. How big is the app’s estimated fleet vehicle pool available in your metro/service area?
 11. What is your % revenue take on each ride? What will be your estimated average profit on an app-assigned ride? How will the app rates vary from the full rates of your company?
 12. What are customization opportunities for your company on the app, such as rates, participation levels, vehicle offerings, etc.?
 13. VITAL: What are the data security procedures and guarantees for all of your client information and financial transactions?
 14. What happens if the app is not good for your business? Are there any penalties or consequences if you withdraw?
 15. Is there any risk of an app vendor becoming a competitor of your local clients?
 16. Does the app take advanced reservations and then schedule them right away? Or, like Uber, does it hold on to the reservation and wait to send the booking shortly before the requested pick-up time?
 17. Does the app provider seem willing to potentially communicate or integrate with other apps to expand available fleet pools?
 18. What is the sales approach of the app representatives: Forthright, low key? High-pressure? Doom-n-gloom warnings?
 19. What do your clients think about the conveniences and usages of an app? What percentage would use one?
 20. CLINCHER: If you sign up with on-demand and/or near-demand app(s), would you still be able to exceed the customer service quality and performance of TNCs?

Greater minds than mine could think of more questions. I had to cut this at 20 to keep it snappy. A few other points to remember: Don’t rush. You want to pick the right one, at the right time for peace of mind. Optimism sells better than pessimism, just as hope trumps fear. Download any available limo apps to your smartphone and try them out repeatedly as ghost riders in different parts of town.

Finally, share information and talk, talk, talk amongst yourselves, whether online or in-person. I look forward to talking with many of you further about apps at the International LCT Show in Las Vegas, now just a few months away on Feb. 29-March 2, 2016. No matter how sophisticated apps become, I predict one effective business tool that will endure: Word of mouth.
