Richard Murillo Moves To New Sales Post At Coach West

Richard Murillo joined Coach West Aug. 4. (photo courtesy of Murillo)

CARSON, Calif. — Former sales and marketing executive Richard Murillo of American Limousine Sales announced Sept. 12 his new sales post at Coach West in Carson.

Murillo, citing an interest in expanding into the bus and Sprinter van markets, joined Coach West on Aug. 4 after 11 years at American Limousine Sales, a limousine builder and seller based in Lynwood and Los Angeles.

“It been on my mind for a while,” Murillo told LCT. “I have a lot of admiration and respect for the entire team at American Limousine Sales. I needed to offer clients more than limousines and party buses. Coach West will allow me to do that with different options.”

Thanks to a partnership with Executive Coach Builders, Murillo and Coach West can offer a wide variety of bus and limousine vehicles.

“I am really excited to be part of a family oriented team that offers professional vehicles to the industry,” said Murillo, a regular exhibitor at LCT trade shows known for posting and picturing exotic vehicles for sale on Facebook. “I will miss the gull wing doors and exotic limos, but I know that time has passed. The bus industry is huge with a lot to offer clients.”

Murrillo says he looks forward to embracing the new team and family at Coach West and learning from them. “I have been in the limo industry for 15 years and now it’s time to plant my feet in the bus and Sprinter market as well.”

LANY Gears Up To Tackle Wide Range Of Issues Sept. 19

LONG ISLAND CITY, N.Y. — The Limousine Association of New York (LANY), the professional membership organization for luxury limo base operators in the New York City metro area, will host a meeting of the general membership on Sept. 19 at Farrell Limousine on 22-11 38th Ave. in Long Island City. The meeting is open to both members and non-member lux base operators

After surviving a crushing recession that lasted almost a decade and dealing with the disruption of transportation network companies (TNCs), the LANY meeting will tackle a number of major issues affecting the industry’s survival. The meeting is open to all luxury base operators in the New York City metro area, including those who are not members of the association.

“I don’t want to be an alarmist, but our industry is in crisis,” aid Jeff Rose, LANY president and president of Attitude New York. “The regulatory process has become so politicized with decisions and new regulations coming more and more from the New York City Council, the Mayor’s Office and Albany, not to mention the federal government. For decades, a small group of members has fought for our industry segment. Now, we must be able to demonstrate that we speak for thousands of hard-working men and women. LANY is the best way to do this, and we all need the association to be as strong as possible.”

LANY President Jeff Rose (LCT photo)
In addition to the sales tax, paid sick leave, data collection, fatigue rules, enhanced chauffeur license requirements, the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) has proposed a new regulation requiring all for-hire vehicle (FHV) bases to dispatch 25% of all jobs into wheelchair accessible vehicles. This proposed new rule threatens the existence of the industry, and a politically powerful group of advocates is pushing it.

LANY believes it is critical to convince leaders there are better solutions to providing WAV service in the NYC market. The industry must demonstrate strong numbers in terms of jobs provided and other contributions to economic activity, as well as its importance to the city’s transportation system.

Working alongside other industry associations, such as the Black Car Assistance Corp. (BCAC) and The Limousine, Bus, Taxi Operators of Upstate New York (LBTOUNY), LANY has made headway on a number of issues. Those include convincing the TLC to amend its original fatigue rules proposal, allowing one touch two-way radios, and getting the Port Authority to put aside proposed airport usage fees that would’ve cost bases tens of thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours in compliance efforts.

Luxury base operators interested in attending LANY’s meeting of the general membership can RSVP by sending an email to Thelany.info@gmail.com.

What You Need to Know About Running for the NLA Board

NLA President Gary Buffo of Pure Luxury TransportationIn the coming weeks, the National Limousine Association (NLA) will begin accepting nominations for the 2018 NLA Board of Directors Election. Any NLA members who want to get more involved, shape the future of the association, and represent the members in their region are strongly encouraged to consider submitting a nomination.

To prepare yourself, please review the eligibility information, commitment requirements, and expectations below prior to submitting your nomination.

Make Sure You are Eligible
According to NLA bylaws (Article 6, Sections B and C), all prospective directors must meet the following criteria:
1. The individual must be a corporate officer or principal of a Regular Active Member (operator) company that has been a Regular Active Member for at least two consecutive years.
2. Any Regular Active Member sharing common ownership with another Regular Active Member can only have one representative on the NLA Board of Directors at one time.
3. A member of the NLA Board shall not be a member of another board of directors that is competitive to the NLA or the limousine industry.
4. Membership dues must be current for the Regular Active Member.

Which Board Seats are Up for Election This Year?
The following seats on the NLA Board are up for election for the 2018-2021 term:
1. At Large: 2 seats (any state in U.S.)
2. US Central Region: 1 seat (AR, IA, IL, IN, KS, LA, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, OH, OK, SD, TX, WI)
3. US Northeast Region: 1 seat (CT, MA, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, VT)

6. Proof of your corporate officer position. (Example: Corporate resolution or articles of incorporation listing officers/shareholders)
7. An explanation of anything the Nominating Committee should know about you that might reflect adversely on the NLA.

What Else Do I Need to Know?
Being a member of any board is not just a title or something to put on your resume: There are commitments that each director must make, both of their time and financially. The Board meets face-to-face four times a year and via conference call another eight times. Additional conference calls are held as needed and there is action that must be taken via email periodically.

For most members, each in-person meeting includes flights and a hotel stay. The NLA provides a per-diem reimbursement that will cover some travel and lodging costs, but each board member covers the remainder of the costs. It is important to note that these meetings also mean time away from your business and family. Please make sure that you are comfortable with this and are able to devote your time and resources to the NLA prior to submitting your application.

In addition to the Board meetings and conference calls, board members are also assigned to be a co-chair of at least one NLA committee. Some of the committees meet via conference call weekly, others monthly or bi-monthly. Your committee involvement and participation is vital to the success of the association and where a lot of the “action” happens.

What Happens Next?
You will receive an email within the next couple weeks notifying members that the NLA is now accepting board nominations. If you have any questions at any time during the process, please email info@limo.org and the NLA staff will either answer it or forward it to the appropriate person to answer.

Visit limo.org for more information.
