Bermuda Operator Expands Affiliate Base Stateside

(L to R) Coleman Mills, operations manager, and Gregory Armstrong, owner of Quality Transport
Who: Gregory Armstrong, owner of Quality Transport, Southampton, Bermuda

Customer service: The company has many repeat clients who request the same chauffeurs. Armstrong tries his best to always make it happen. “We also take some of our clients’ children to school, so they clearly trust us with their most prized possessions,” he says.

Start-up costs and methods: In Bermuda, vehicle permits are expensive. To start his company, Armstrong first spent about $340,000. Traditional U.S. chauffeured vehicles aren’t used on the island because the roads are very narrow; the company runs Japanese and European vehicles instead. “The biggest we are allowed to use in the SUV category is the Audi Q7, which is similar to the BMW X5 or a Range Rover,” he says. Bermuda is a big hub for international business, mostly for tax exemption reasons. “We pitched our service to various companies here, and slowly but surely, one contract led to another and we continued to grow.”

Marketing strategies: Armstrong has used a little bit of every tactic to help market his business. This includes SEO, Facebook ads, advertising in the local paper, and mass emails, but the most successful method has been word of mouth.

Fast Facts

Location: Southampton, Bermuda

Owner: Gregory Armstrong

Founded: 2009

Vehicle Type: Ford Transit, Audi Q7, Toyota Alphard, Hyundai H1

Employees: 12

Advice: When selling yourself as a professional chauffeured transportation company, your first shot is your only shot. Make sure all of your branding is consistent, and hire flexible chauffeurs who are hospitable, willing to work with you, and put in the same time and interest as if it were their company. “It’s so important to create a great support team,” he says.

Origins: Quality Transport was created as a spinoff of the event management company Armstrong owns. People needed transportation to and from the events, so starting a company that got clients where they needed to be was a no-brainer.

Future plans: Armstrong attended the 2017 International LCT Show to start networking more off the island, and hopes to grow his affiliate base and expand the company’s reach to new clientele.

The island of Bermuda (Credit: Flickr user Peter Burka)
Lessons learned: Running a company in this industry involves putting in a lot of long hours. “In the world of transportation, there are no holidays, weekends, or 9-to-5 mentalities,” he says. “There’s a lot of rescheduling due to unforeseen circumstances, so you have to try to be prepared for anything. You must have good coordinating, organization, and time management skills.”

Biggest success: Winning a contract with the second biggest hotel in Bermuda, the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club.

Free time: When he does get some down time, Armstrong loves to travel. “I live on an island, so I can’t do road trips,” he jokes. He tries to go somewhere new every year.

How To Get Everyone Off The Bus

While state and federal inspectors closely examine exit doors, operators should spend time training drivers on how and when to evacuate.

Chaos in an Evacuation
An order for passengers to evacuate a motorcoach or a minibus immediately can create a stampede and cause people to die from being trampled. This is why it’s so important for a driver to lead and control an orderly evacuation and know when to do it. A driver should determine in real-time where to assemble passengers before ordering them to leave the bus.

When to Evacuate
Obviously, fire and smoke would warrant an evacuation. However, a highway collision does not necessarily require one. Leaving the safety of a bus to stand on a busy highway could place passengers at a higher risk than just waiting for law enforcement to arrive and detour traffic. The driver is always the “captain of the ship” and must make command decisions based upon the safety and risks to passengers aboard.

Practice
While your drivers might be familiar with roof hatches, how many have actually opened it all the way, beyond just for ventilation? The FMSCA requires emergency exits be tested every 90-days, and the results must be recorded in writing and signed by the inspector(s). Make sure every driver knows how to open every emergency exit on every fleet vehicle. Don’t just teach them where the red handles are; have them open all exits as if in an emergency.

Exits & Order

When boarding a new group for a trip, a driver should point out all of the emergency exits and explain how they work. It doesn’t have to be as detailed as an airline flight, but it would help to know in advance how they operate. In an emergency, the driver should calmly announce the need to evacuate and do so row by row and alternate each side of the bus for an orderly, safe, and efficient exit. He should direct the passengers to an assembly area and account for each passenger once all have disembarked.

Using Emergency Exits

The primary entrance door(s) should always be used unless compromised or blocked by a collision or hazard. Using a window exit is more difficult than it might seem. Once you unlock the windows with the red handles, the window pushes away from the bottom but remains hinged at the top. This exit will require help from people in and out of the coach.

On the inside, someone must hold it open for those exiting through the window. On the outside, the drop is steep and those who exit first should be directed to help others exiting behind them until all passengers have left. A roof hatch should be used only if the vehicle has flipped on its side or is submerged in water. The drop from the roof of a motorcoach on its wheels can cause serious injury. Even if the vehicle has rolled, passengers can easily fall and get hurt climbing out of a roof exit if they don’t get help from outside bystanders.

See 8 Generations Of Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Photo via Wikimedia Commons user Борис Ульзибат

The S-Class, or Sonderklasse (“special class”), is the top dog of the Mercedes-Benz sedan lineup, representing the leading edge of the German brand’s luxury and tech offerings.

Though the “S” badge designations officially started in 1972 (and have since sold 4 million cars), these flagships trace their lineage back to 1954 when the blocky “Ponton” launched the range-topping sedan as we know it.

Number Crunching Operators Pay It Forward

Los Angeles operator Vadim Dashuta (L) paid for a woman's groceries in a Denver supermarket after her debit card was declined. (Photo from Driving Results)
DENVER, Col. -– Driving Results, a consulting group for the industry, recently held an owners group meeting in Denver. Instead of staying confined to hotel meeting rooms, 14 members of the Wheels in Motion group fanned out across downtown Denver to perform random acts of kindness upon the citizens of Denver.

The group randomly showed up at a soup house, washed dishes and worked the food line. They came upon a lady who had locked herself out of her car and they helped her unlock it. They paid for a young woman’s groceries when her debit card declined as she and her young son purchased groceries. The group handed out flowers to people they passed as well as Oreo cookies, bottles of water and fresh fruit from the hotel lobby where the group stayed.

The random acts of kindness were part of a team building exercise intended to measure leadership, use of resources, creative thinking and cash management as each team was given cash and expected to achieve maximum value with cash provided. Each interaction was documented in a video and presented later in a class setting. The real winners were the people of Denver who received a kind gesture from total strangers from the limousine industry.

Kansas City operator Tim Weigman opens a car door for a woman accidentally locked out of her car. (Photo from Driving Results)
Wheels In Motion meets three times a year in different cities for the purpose of learning, round table discussions, goal setting for the next quarter, and sharing creative ideas with each other about problems, trends and situations in the industry. Some members of the group entered into a weight loss challenge and each member put up $100 betting they could lose the most weight by November. Eleven members of the group did a weigh in during a site visit at Town & Country Limousine of Denver and will be weighed in when the group meets again. The weight loss winner will get $1,000 for their efforts and the runner up gets $100.

Google Gets Into On-Demand Carpool Market

Wikipedia Commons image of two people riding in a car.
The Wall Street Journal headline sounds ominous: “Google Takes on Uber With New Ride-Share Service.” But the reality is less dramatic. Google — one of Uber’s early investors — isn’t actually launching a full-fledged Uber rival. Not today, at least.

What is happening: Waze, the crowdsourced mapping and navigation app that Google acquired in 2013, is expanding its ride-sharing pilot in San Francisco, according to the WSJ report. The service lets drivers pick up passengers who are traveling in the same direction, or are headed to a similar destination, in exchange for payment.

Unlicensed Driver Blames Crash On Faulty Brakes

Courtesy of LSP
NEW ORLEANS, La. — The driver of the party bus that crashed early Aug. 28 in St. John the Baptist Parish blamed faulty brakes for the fatal collision, according to three people who have spoken to surviving witnesses.

Meanwhile, several elected officials in Louisiana and beyond demanded answers regarding the immigration status of the bus driver, Denis Yasmir Amaya Rodriguez, an undocumented Honduran national who has been cited a half-dozen times for driving without a license and was arrested in 2011 on domestic abuse battery charges that were later dropped.
