Dane Powell, 31, was captured on video carrying a black flag while throwing rocks and bricks at D.C. police officers and shattering store windows during the 30-minute riot that spanned 16 city blocks, prosecutors said. He was also dressed in black and had part of his face covered.

The riot also resulted in the burning of a stretch limousine parked along a Washington, D.C. street.

No Trust, No Affiliate Relationship

Michelle Miller, vice president of Elite Coach Limousine, Inc.

PITTSBURGH, Penn. — In the affiliate business, a chauffeured transportation company is considered professional only if you can trust them completely with your client.

Michelle Miller, vice president of Elite Coach Limousine, Inc., says when picking another business to work with, confidence in their ability to treat your customer right (and vice versa) is a vital part of the relationship.

“Once you’ve given that trust, you need to believe in their ability to get the job done,” Miller says. “If you’re giving this work to us, we will treat that client as well as, if not better than, one of our own. We’re all transportation companies who understand how important that is.”

Of Elite Coach Limousine’s affiliate work, farm-in accounts for 80%, and farm-out 20%. Flexibility is the key to accommodating special needs and requests, including modifications of times, sending confirmations, and getting chauffer confirmations out 24 hours before the trip instead of four, Miller says.

“We are very transparent, and our business model has always been hands-on,” she says. Leadership is accessible and easy to reach, and office staff always sends over detailed confirmation sheets so there are no hidden charges or surprises. “Our chauffeurs are also able to give any information to an affiliate that calls, and respect the client relationship with the affiliate.”

LCT CONNECT PROFILE HERE

Clients are using and relying on relationships and connections to guide them in finding a company that offers that same kind of relationship wherever they are traveling, she says. Clients are more comfortable dealing directly with the people they know.

“It’s not so much price based as it is service based; if people are just looking at price, just because they pay more it doesn’t mean they’re getting the best service. Just like if you pay less it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting worse service.”

The company signed up for LCT Connect because it is a good way to get its name out to individuals who are either starting off in the affiliate business or may not have a relationship with a company that can offer them any kind of vehicle they may need.

“Instead of aimlessly calling around and looking for individuals who are going to answer their phone or have the right equipment, they’ll be able to find everything we have listed on our profile. We pull a lot of business based on our versatility.”

We Left Our Hearts in San Francisco for Our 3rd Annual Executive Retreat

SF Retreat
San Francisco — More than 220 industry professionals joined us in the City by the Bay for Chauffeur Driven’s third annual Executive Retreat. Held June 25-28 at the Hotel Nikko in beautiful Union Square, the event was jam-packed with education, networking, and oh-so-much fun as we cruised the bay, learned from leading industry experts, and enjoyed sipping on wine during our Napa day trip. The event was made possible by all of our generous sponsors, including Platinum Sponsors Grech Motors and Ford-Lincoln Livery Vehicles. Where else can you be so cool in the middle of summer?

Retreat Education
San Francisco was a top pick for our attendees (the close second was San Diego, which is the location of our May 2018 retreat), and all that makes the Bay Area awesome was infused in the event. We kicked off our Opening Reception with a visit to the world-class Starlight Room, the posh penthouse destination at the Sir Francis Drake hotel, where we were entertained by cabaret-style music, tons of cocktails, and breathtaking views of the evening skyline. We topped it on Monday night with our private yacht cruise that took us throughout the area, including under the Golden Gate and Bay bridges, right past Alcatraz Island, and near AT&T Park, where a night game was underway.

“I had a great time attending events, networking with other companies, and learning new ideas to implement. While it is a great party, it is not just a party. Very thought provoking,” said George Jacobs of Windy City Limousine in Chicago, Ill.

Retreat Education
Our education is always the highlight of any event we hold, and we got to work on Monday with two “shock scenario” sessions that focused on finance and human (staff) related issues. The sessions, moderated by CD Education Committee co-chairs Jason Sharenow of Broadway Elite and Kristen Carroll of The LMC Group, showed attendees how to prepare for the things that they never see coming, such as the departure or death of a key employee, technology failure, an unexpected audit, or weather-related event. On Tuesday, we invited FranklinCovey speaker Scott Robley—who travels the country to share his business management knowledge on a bevy of topics—to boil down the concept of embracing change, which is as simple and as complicated as it sounds. Organizations spend thousands of dollars on education like this so we were thrilled to have his expertise on hand for our attendees.

Retreat Education
“I took home great action items I can use right away. Dawson [Rutter] gave me ideas on how to look at my reports, Kristina [Bouweiri] gave me ways to look out for the unexpected, and Scott [Robley] gave me communication tools I have already started using with my staff and clients,” said Becky Laramee of All Points Limousine in Worcester, Mass.

“I thought this was an exceptional retreat with fun activities, great location, and educational content. Really enjoyed all sessions! Covey session was worth every penny. I downloaded his Speed of Trust book right after the conference and read it flying home,” said Kim Garner of BEST Transportation in St. Louis, Mo.

On Wednesday, we topped off the retreat with a trip to gorgeous Napa Valley. We broke into groups and boarded Grech buses for our day trip, where we visited three very different but equally beautiful wineries (included in the price of retreat). We strolled through the cool, historic caves of Beringer, rode hillside trams to the top at Sterling, and enjoyed the bucolic views at Artessa, all while sipping several wines at each stop. The groups were also treated to a delicious buffet lunch at Napa Ford Lincoln. Of course, wine was flowing and the good times were rolling as we made our way back to San Francisco later in the day.

Retreat Education
“Staff was personable and the event felt much more intimate than others we have attended. The welcome reception at Starlight Room and the boat cruise were top notch–the food was great at both. We love the Chauffeur Driven team; they have an inclusive approach. Whether you are the owner or affiliate manager of a car service business, or in our case, a corporate travel technology company– they make you feel welcome. We always look forward to their events,” said Jackie Miehls of Deem in San Francisco, Calif.

Retreat Education
Next up is our annual show, which will be held this October 22-25 at the spectacular Gaylord Palms in sunny Orlando—all under one roof! Next year, we take our Executive Retreat to the brand-new Pendry Hotel in San Diego, scheduled for May 6-8. Look for all the deets at chauffeurdrivenshow.com, and be sure to check out the retreat recap in the August issue of Chauffeur Driven!

Proven Results And Return With STOP Chauffeur Training

It should go without saying training your chauffeurs is important. But do you just put them through a course, give them a pat on the back, and never review the material again?

Following up is essential, no matter if they’ve been driving three years or 30. The Safety Training Operators Program (STOP) was founded by Lee Martinez as a way for his insurance clients to receive a discount if they had a formal written safety training program within their fleet companies. He built the program to specifically address the insurance industry’s desire to have better trained chauffeurs and drivers who help reduce incidents and lower accident costs.

All Go For STOP

Now run by CEO James Brett, the program has migrated online. STOP covers a variety of safety issues, including ones that are often overlooked.

For example, backing up is difficult for chauffeurs of any skill level, but learning how to properly lift heavy luggage is something people might not realize is a high-claim issue.

“Safety is a big concern, and that’s why we see the opportunity for discounts when operators integrate a formal written safety training program into their business,” Brett says.

Learn And Retain

Because the program is written in middle school-level English and each module only takes six to 10 minutes to complete, chauffeurs retain more of what they learn. These snappy, concise components ensure chauffeurs won’t be zoning out in a boring classroom environment. In addition, the program is built so chauffeurs have the flexibility to do the courses at their own pace on whatever device they feel most comfortable using.

“They can come back and do a refresher course, or their manager can say, ‘This week we are going to focus on left turns, and in a couple of months we’ll do one on inclement weather,’” Brett says.

For $20 a year per chauffer, you get unlimited access to all course modules — and a big bang for your buck. “We typically say you’ll get a 30 times ROI,” Brett says. “If you invest $20 in your driver’s safety, we estimate you’re going to see a savings in excess of $600 per year just in reduction of claims and driver retention. Those are the numbers we’ve been seeing from the clients we’ve been serving.”
STOP, LLC. CEO James Brett lives an active lifestyle and stresses the importance of safety whether you are driving a limousine, motorcycle, or even a mountain bike.

Results

The company has seen plenty of results-oriented proof of the success rate of their program, Brett says. When drivers take the courses, it significantly reduces the frequency and severity of the incidents that have occurred. “It shouldn’t be seen as an expense. It should be seen as an investment,” he says.

The reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, eliciting responses like this one from Brandan Stein of Exclusive Sedan Service: “The STOP program has helped our safety and training process greatly. I haven’t witnessed another program [for our industry] that interacts like this program. I would highly recommend any company implement this program into not only your training, but your mentoring and follow up processes as well.”

STOP also can work with customers to customize the training however they’d like. For example, they can incorporate your company’s mission statement, add your logo, include video, or even create various customer service elements for your training program.
The program has produced definitive evidence that those who use it as a training tool see lasting results.

No Complacency

If your chauffeurs insist they don’t need the training, or you think it’s too much of a time commitment, think again. “Despite our confidence, each of us as a driver becomes more complacent as we get older. We develop bad habits, but become supposedly more experienced,” Brett explains. “The STOP solution specifically addresses and refreshes even the most seasoned professional driver’s routines and knowledge base in a time efficient and effective manner.”

The company will be launching its fully mobile enabled courses next quarter so chauffeurs will be able take them while waiting for their clients. And there will be no need to worry about employees attempting to access the site while driving; a special lockout detects motion or speed and blocks the chauffeur from the site.

This product addresses the needs of small- to medium-sized fleet owners who want to provide the safest rides possible. “Some people will argue classroom is better than online, but at $20 a head with definitive proof, we can reduce the severity and frequency of incidents. I think there’s nothing out there that compares.”

Escalade Adds Communications, Safety Features

Cadillac has added new communications and safety equipment to the outsized Escalade for 2016, making it the first version to integrate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing drivers easy access to their cellphone contacts, music and apps.

The new Escalade also makes more use of its vibrating safety-alert driver’s seat. Now, via a new lane departure safety system, the seat vibrates to alert a driver when the SUV is straying from its lane, not just when it is getting too close to nearby objects while parking.

Eleanor Is Like Siri For Self-Driving Rolls-Royce

Rolls-Royce unveiled its vision for a driverless future earlier this month in London: the Rolls-Royce Vision Next 100.

The self-driving vehicle will come with the “Voice of Eleanor,” a Siri-like virtual assistant and chauffeur, named after Eleanor Thornton, a British actress and model who died nearly a century ago and served as muse to the artist Charles Sykes, who sculpted the original Sprit of Ecstasy that became the Rolls icon more than 100 years ago.

According to Rolls-Royce, “Eleanor becomes their virtual assistant and chauffeur, freeing them of all effort and encumbrance. Imbued with her own artificial intelligence, she works intuitively to advise her owners on itineraries, schedules and options before they leave their residence.”

Mercedes-Benz’s Rival To Tesla Debuts In September

Come September, Mercedes-Benz will lift the covers off its first all-electric sedan in the form of a rival to the Tesla Model S.

During discussions with Australian publication Motoring, the company’s Australian senior manager of corporate communications David McCarthy said that the car will debut at the Paris Motor Show and give Tesla a “good reason to be concerned about it”.
