How To Take Advantage Of Millennial FOMO

The only thing more important to a Millennial than their smartphones and tablets is what they do on those devices: Share every waking moment of their lives on various social media platforms.

In the morning, they take a photo of the amazing breakfast they had and upload it to Instagram. At work, they’ll take pictures of themselves with funny filters on Snapchat during a break (or when the boss isn’t looking). When they get home, they’ll post a status update to Facebook informing all their friends they’re beginning their binge watching session of whatever show is the latest craze on Netflix.

These all seem like mundane events, but when that person goes somewhere special (an exotic country) or experiences something truly remarkable (meeting a celebrity), it causes FOMO — fear of missing out. Without a doubt, it seems as if the goal of constantly posting about one’s life is to either a) make the person who is posting seem more interesting than they actually are or b) make their friends jealous. This behavior is spurred on by likes, comments, and shares, and keeps everyone looking for new ways to make their followers wish they were there, too.

Let’s apply this concept to the luxury ground transportation industry, shall we? What would impress my friends more: A post from the back of an Uber or Lyft driver’s Toyota Prius with some questionable candy in the cup holder, or a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with a Maybach ceiling and mood lighting driven by a chauffeur? I’m going to venture a guess and say the latter would get me tons of sarcastic “Thanks for the invite! ” comments while the former would prompt ones like, “Better hope those mints aren’t laced with something…”

“But Lexi! Millennials are all about saving money and being cheap. Aren’t people your age constantly complaining about student debt?” you ask. Yes, this is true. Chauffeured transportation isn’t cheap — but as I’ve heard MANY of you say, “You get what you pay for.” People my age crave experiences, not material objects. Many of my friends are disciplined enough to put away a little bit of their paychecks each week to save for trips to foreign countries and then rave about going to another as soon as their plane lands back home. You see, once Millennials taste what a rare experience is like, they crave more. This is what you must learn how to take advantage of; but first you have to get them in the car.

If they start to quibble about price and how they can get a better rate with an app-based company, tell them anyone can take a TNC. But if they want to arrive on time, safe, and (most importantly) in style, they should give you a try. Consider offering a special coupon code on your business’ social media accounts, or tell them you’ll give them a refund if they aren’t completely satisfied with their experience.

Also explain to them the benefits of vehicles like luxury vans and minibuses for group excursions to clubs and bar crawls. They hold more people, meaning the price can be split up which makes it more affordable. Everyone will arrive at the same time, and no one will drive while inebriated. Most importantly, no one will get left out due to lack of seats; you can’t Uber a Sprinter. Tell them to check out your Yelp page and testimonials on your mobile friendly website if they have any doubts about what they are getting for the cash they are dropping.

When they do decide to go through with it, encourage them to post a review and include your official hashtag when they post their photos and videos on social media (and trust me, they will).

The bottom line is this: Using a luxury car service is a unique experience — so start marketing it as one.

Kevin “Big K” Doublin (1952-2017)

Kevin Doublin (1952-2017)Kevin “Big K” Doublin (1952-2017)

The industry is mourning the passing of Kevin Doublin, founder and owner of Big K Corporate Transportation based in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. The company, which he founded in 2010 with his wife, Jadwiga, was actually a “retirement” project for him: He had worked for many years with the Milwaukee Country Transit System as a professional coach bus driver. Having driven buses during his career, he remained a bus enthusiast. Despite his illness, he was able to continue running the company with the assistance of his family.

The Chicago native was a fixture on Facebook, often exchanging passionate but good-natured barbs whenever a comment was made about his beloved Chicago Cubs—and he was clearly on top of the world when the Cubbies won the World Series in 2016.

Through his company, he participated in many charitable drives, including donating a limobus during the “Stuff the Bus” drives to collect toys for displaced children at a local women’s shelter. The company also sponsored meals for the shelter.

A viewing will be held on Friday, January 13, between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Proko Funeral Home in Kenosha, Wisc. The burial will be private. More information can be found at prokofuneralhome.com.

He is survived by his wife, Jadwiga; his two daughters, Melissa and Christine; grandchildren, Jozef, Brooklyn, and Cesar; a sister, Kathleen Rich; and his mother-in-law, Danuta Koziol.

Houston’s Avanti and A Ambassador Announce Merger

Erich ReindlAvanti CEO and President Erich Reindl

Houston — Effective January 1, 2017, Avanti Transportation and A Ambassador Limousine & Transportation have merged their operations.

Avanti’s Erich Reindl will retain his titles of CEO and president while A Ambassador’s Mike Hajek will remain on board in an undetermined managerial capacity, which Reindl said will “definitely involve sales and marketing.”

Reindl added that unifying the two Texas businesses will create one of the largest companies in not only the Houston region but also the state—and was a decision that both he and Hajek feel will yield untold benefits to both outfits.

“It’s a combination that gives both companies a great opportunity because we have something the other company doesn’t have, and vice versa,” Reindl said. “It’s a really good fit with incredible advantages down the road. We don’t overlap on any of our accounts. It’s really a compelling financial and strategic transaction, I think.”

The merger, which was closed on December 30, comes after roughly a month of conversations and determining how the two companies will combine their employees, fleet, offices, and resources. Reindl was emphatic that the entire A Ambassador team is welcome to remain on the team.

“We explained that nobody is getting fired,” Reindl explained. “I have no intention of letting anyone go.”

While the two companies have a combined 150-vehicle fleet—including four buses from Avanati and 36 from A Ambassador, plus sedans, Mercedes-Benz Sprinters, and SUVs—Reindl said that they will work to “trim the fat,” getting rid of older vehicles that don’t need to be replaced to “increase the fleet’s efficiency.”

The companies will work from Avanti’s three-acre property, which Reindl hopes to outgrow “in the near future,” as they combine their strengths to both companies’ benefit.

“A Ambassador has year-long contracts on their buses that Avanti doesn’t have. They have passenger airlines where they transport the crew and the first-class passenger, while Avanti has the cargo airlines,” Reindl said. “I consider Avanti an old-style limousine company as we knew it 15 or 20 years ago. We are strong in that market and nationwide: We not only have affiliate work but also clients nationwide. That is our strength.”

The merger comes as a response to an ever-changing industry, one that Reindl sees as having changed tremendously in the past five years especially in ways that put larger companies at an advantage.

“Smaller companies may run into difficulties moving forward—some of them are already facing hardships. I’m not saying a larger company doesn’t have that problem, but a larger company maybe has the resources to get through that. On top if it, we will be, as a larger company, able to attract and go after clients that smaller companies would not have the opportunity to,” Reindl said. “And with TNCs, we haven’t been as affected as the taxi industry—yet. But it could come. All I know is that the cake did not get any bigger and everyone out there is nibbling on the cake. I think at this stage, bigger is better.”

A New Year, a New Last Name

Mary Beall JohnsonMary Beall and Dan Johnson

Phoenix — In a truly celebratory new beginning on January 1, 2017, The Driver Provider’s Mary Beall married her fiancĂ© Dan Johnson at their Arizona home.

The wedding seemed like an impromptu event to most of the Johnsons’ eight guests—including Mary’s son and daughter-in-law—who were all emphatically told “to come to the house dressed in jeans and sweats” for a cozy dinner to ring in 2017. The only attendee in on the surprise was Joe Guinn of Limo & Bus Compliance, as Mary tapped the ordained minister to officiate the couple’s low-key nuptials.

“No one had any idea they were being invited to a wedding,” said Mary, who is also on the Chauffeur Driven Charity Committee. “We told everyone that we were just inviting them to a casual dinner. My son laughed when I told him I was getting married right now.”

The couple recently celebrated their two-year anniversary in December, leading to a short engagement that was soon followed by the New Year’s Day wedding ceremony in the couple’s living room.

The entire Chauffeur Driven team extends their warmest wishes for a lifetime of happiness to the newlyweds.

Chosen Payments Adopts Two Families for Christmas

Chosen Payments donating presents

Moorpark, Calif. — Credit card processor Chosen Payments recently helped two families in need have a “Chosen Christmas” by donating presents and gift cards this holiday season. The company selected a family in the Midwest as well as a local household who have been struggling with financial issues over the year.

In Michigan, Chosen Payments assisted a family of five, whose middle child, Melody, suffers from Moebius syndrome, a rare neurological disorder characterized by weakness or paralysis of multiple cranial nerves. The condition puts Melody in the hospital for months at a time, which puts a hefty financial burden on the family.

After hearing of the family’s plight, Sarah McKee, Chosen’s VIP client relationship manager, arranged for the company to adopt the family, and she and CEO Jeff Brodsly travel to meet the family in person. In addition to the gifts donated by Chosen Payments others in the family’s community came forward and made a mortgage payment for them.

In their hometown, Chosen assisted a family a single mom raising three kids. This Moorpark family was brought to the company’s attention through the local chapter of the Boys and Girls Club. Chosen acted as Santa, and gifted the children with toys, sporting goods, clothes, and shoes as well as a family dinner at Red Lobster.

Hy’s Limousine Worldwide Celebrates ‘Blue Sapphire’ 65th Anniversary

Bob and Matt LevineBob and Matt Levine

West Haven, Conn. — Hy’s Limousine Wordwide is proud to announce that they’ve recently celebrated its 65th anniversary in 2016.

Founded by Hyman Levine in in 1951 with a single Packard Limousine, the company flourished under the leadership of Hyman and son Bob, sgrowing into the largest livery service in Connecticut.

Harry Truman was President and Elizabeth II was still a Princess, when Hy bought the Packard. A Streetcar Named Desire hit the movie houses as Hyman’s car hit New Haven. It was a big star at weddings back then and the business grew on the bridal, funeral and special event bookings. When Bob joined the business right out of college he recognized that there was an opportunity to book “over-the-road” transportation and began buying the company’s first sedans and by 1980 they were up to 28 vehicles. Ground broke for the new 15,000sf headquarters in West Haven in 1982. Sadly Hy’s lost Hyman just months before the Grand Opening. Bob took the helm and has charted a course of great success fueled by a commitment to excellence.

Hy’s opened a second office in New Britain in 1998 to better serve upper Connecticut and Massachusetts, and acquired Greeenwich Executive Transportation in 2015 to anchor service in lower Fairfield County, Westchester County, NY and New York City (Hy’s is MassPort and NYTLC permitted).

Hyman Levine and Bob LevineHyman and Bob Levine

By the time Bob’s son Matthew Levine joined in 2008, the business had expanded to a 100-vehicle fleet. After a stint in New York City in the marketing department at Rolling Stone magazine following his graduation from Syracuse, Matt fell into the family business.

“Part of me really wanted to set out and create my own path, but the pull of the family and the heritage of this business was just too strong. I was so proud of my grandfather and my father growing up, having built this amazing company and working so hard to do business and serve customers the right way, I realized that I want to help carry on this legacy as well,” Matt says.

Bob added “As you might imagine I was thrilled to have Matt decide to come home and continue what his grandfather started. But it wasn’t just the family thing. Matt brought back a really valuable set of skills. The advances he initiated in technology have put us at the forefront of the industry and his marketing experience has delivered measurable results. And you can rest assured that it wasn’t me who put us on Facebook, Twitter and the like!”

Hy's first PackardThe original Packard Limousine purchased by Hyman Levine

One of the benefits of a long, successful history is the opportunity to be a part of the fabric of a great community Hy’s contributes to many area charities and causes and is most proud of its partnership with the Make-a-Wish Foundation that has resulted in many fulfilled wishes and broad smiles. Bob adds with a grin “the kids do light up when a shiny super stretch pulls up.”

So the Blue Sapphire 65th Anniversary is upon Hy’s Limousine Worldwide and there is a great deal of pride in the history and a clear-eyed vision for the future. “My grandfather used to say ‘Every ride has to be perfect’. That hasn’t changed,” says Matthew Levine.

Karhoo Strives To Provider Reliable Chauffeured Options

The idea for Karhoo came about when founder Daniel Ishag was abroad with a group of friends and had a bad experience booking a local cab.
NEW YORK — “The way you get from A to B is about to get smarter.”

This is the phrase you’ll be greeted with when you arrive at the homepage of Karhoo, a vendor-neutral ride-booking app that enables users to compare taxi and private-hire car services from multiple companies.

The idea for Karhoo came about when founder Daniel Ishag was abroad with a group of friends and had a bad experience booking a local cab.

When his vehicle didn’t show up three or four times within the same evening, he knew he had to create a platform that would allow passengers to easily select and book local cabs, anywhere in the world.

FASTFACTS

Karhoo
Location: New York
Service: vendor-neutral ride-booking app
Founded: 2014
Owner: Daniel Ishag
Employees: 100
Website: Karhoo.com
Hashtag: #TravelSavvy
Contact: (917) 773-7000

How It Works

Ride apps face formidable competition from mega for-hire services such as Uber and Lyft, so what makes Karhoo any different? Besides the fact that you can filter and choose rides by ETA, vehicle type, and brand, you’ll also be able to compare the price ranges of multiple companies at once.

Not only that, but the company works with already established licensed taxi operators instead of individual drivers. This allows them to add thousands of drivers at once instead of hiring a random driver for you to share a ride with.

“We’re not competing with any one company,” says Tarek Mallah, the Karhoo Group senior vice president of operations. “We partner up with established, licensed fleets. Karhoo can integrate with hundreds or thousands of vehicles in one go through our technology. It allows us to have much quicker network growth than any other app based on a driver by driver model.”

The company hopes to level the playing field and make taxi and limo companies relevant again. “They are the professionals that will rise to the top,” Mallah says. “If Karhoo can be an asset to saving these companies, I think it is for the best of the transportation ecosystem worldwide.”

From meter taxi to sedan services, black car companies to luxury service providers, and even hybrid options, Karhoo supports the consumer’s desire to choose. Part of this is allowing app users to pre-book or make multiple reservations. They aren’t just booking a way to get from A to B, but also a way to get to C and D as well.

“It’s all about choices and options,” Mallah says. “We do not and will not have a driver app. We want to guarantee the legitimacy of the service provider. We are here to support and be a champion for the incumbents. We are not taking drivers away.”

Karhoo’s team at the LCT-NLA Show East in Atlantic City, N.J., Nov. 8-10 included: Ed Brodeur, Vanessa Montetta, Tarek Mallah, and Michael Someck.
Global Debut
Although it won’t be hitting the Apple App or Google Play store until early in the New Year, Karhoo is already generating buzz. Headquartered in New York, the app will also debut in London and Singapore. It is expected to become a global app, with expansion planned for the rest of the U.S., Europe, and the Far East.

For-hire vehicle companies already are lining up to take part in the endeavor. Companies partnering with Karhoo include: New York car and limousine services Dial 7 and Carmel; UK minicab companies Comcab and Addison Lee; and Singapore’s largest cab company, ComfortDelGro, which has more than 17,000 licensed taxis.

The exact number of vehicles that will be hitting the road changes daily. The company is getting strong interest from fleets around the world. Within 10 months, its global network exceeded 250,000 vehicles.

In addition, the company already has raised $250 million and has plans to procure another $1billion next year. Current investors include former CEO of Sony Music Entertainment Nick Gatfield and cofounder of Indus Capital Partners, David Kowitz. Former CEO of Lloyds Banking Group, Eric Daniels, is a director.

“Hang around and listen to the news,” Mallah says. “Although we are a start-up, we have the DNA for success with marketing and the industry behind us. We have an exceptional, unique concept.”
