Affiliates Love An Operator Who Is Always Prepared

Adam Pierce, operations manager for Star Transportation
EAGAN, Minn. — Adam Pierce, operations manager for Star Transportation, knows time is money, and the more efficiently you work, the more affiliates will thank you for it. For example, rides run a lot smoother if you are prepared with the information most affiliates will ask for ahead of time.

“It makes everyone’s life a lot easier when that info is readily available,” he says. “Even the little details like whether the client would prefer soda over water can make all the difference.”

Speedy and accuracy are becoming more important in a rapidly changing affiliate work environment. Pierce has noticed many affiliates requesting help for runs in an hour, when it used to be reservations would come in at least two to three days in advance. “We’re seeing more requests for on or near-demand rides. It can be challenging, especially when it’s a busy day.”

LCT CONNECT PROFILE HERE

Star Transportation has one of the newest fleets of all of the companies in Minnesota, Pierce says. This includes a variety of sedan, SUV, minibus, and van limos; motorcoaches; and sedan and SUV stretches. Their turnover rate is four years or 100,000 miles.

The business services Minneapolis and Rochester, the home of the world-renowned Mayo Clinic (a nonprofit organization committed to clinical practice, education, and research). Both offices are at or near major airports, which makes runs that much easier.

Pierce says the company signed up for LCT Connect because they get LCT Magazine, and find it has many good resources. “We figured LCT Connect would be a good tool for helping us fill our affiliate needs.”

Star Transportation has been voted favorite transportation in Rochester two years in a row by the readers of the Rochester Post Bulletin and the best limo service in Minnesota by the viewers of WCCO-TV. It’s also had BMW and one of the sponsors of the Ryder cup choose them to drive their VIPs around during the golf event.

This is one operation to contact if you have anybody looking for a ride to next year’s Super Bowl, which will be held at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. “We’d be more than happy to accommodate any of your clients coming to the area,” he says.

Operator, Group Leader Balances Vital Industry Roles

Greene sports a referee outfit for a panel discussion about running a fleet for Super Bowl at the 2013 LCT-NLA Show East in Atlantic City, N.J. He works as a referee for high schools and colleges in his spare time (LCT file photo)
I recently spoke with Greater Atlanta Limousine Association (GALA) President Jeff Greene, founder and president of Greene Worldwide Transportation of Atlanta, and a longtime board director of the National Limousine Association.

LCT: How did you get started in the industry?
A: I was a helicopter pilot with the Atlanta Police Department and had a part-time job as security at a nightclub. One night, Pat Sajak, the host of “Wheel of Fortune,” was waiting for his limousine to pick him up and complained he didn’t know where it was. It finally showed up 45 minutes late. I noticed people complained about late limousines, rude drivers, and dirty limos, so it dawned on me maybe there was an opportunity. I checked with area nightclub owners and hotel concierges and they had the same complaints. So I bought a limousine and started the company from my basement on April 15, 1988 — I remember because it was tax day!

Q: How did you get involved in advocacy for the industry and your association?
A: I joined the National Limousine Association (NLA) and the Georgia Limousine Association (GLA). In 2012, I and about six members wanted to see the association go in a different direction, so we decided to start a new association, the Greater Atlanta Limousine Association (GALA). I was the first GALA president and today we have 50 members. I also have been active with the NLA, serving as president in 2006-2007 and as an at-large board director elected to the 2012-2015 term and again for the 2015-2018 term. I serve as co-chair on the Association Liaison, Nominating, and Sponsorship Committees.

Q: How do you view the state of the industry today, both locally and nationally?
A: The industry has changed dramatically, and a lot has to with the technology gap between Baby Boomers and Millennials. Technology has been embraced by consumers, and frankly, our industry has been a bit late catching up. Today, we have to use technology and provide even a higher level of service — every day, for every client, for first timers, and long-term clients; it doesn’t matter. That’s what makes luxury transportation different — a high level of service.

Q: What are some of the goals you want to accomplish as president of GALA?
A: We have a successful legislative agenda regarding changes at the airport and regulations, and we continue to fight for the safety of the ground transportation industry. We also are putting together an operator network texting program where members can text one another if they have a client who needs transportation right away. The first operator to respond gets that business.
We also provide members with education, networking opportunities, and vendor benefits, and we are very proud of our annual charity golf tournament that benefits Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Over the years, we have donated $50,000. GALA members are a great bunch of men and women, everyone is a friend, and they all deserve to be successful.

Q: What keeps you competitive and motivated?
A: I’ve been in the industry now for 30 years and I still have passion for serving our clients. Every day is different. You have to like people and employ a great staff. I’ve been fortunate to have great chauffeurs and dispatchers, many of whom have been with me more than 20 years. They’re the reason why we have grown over the years. I’m also motivated by the camaraderie within our association and the NLA. Over the years, I have gained so much knowledge from members, and I hope I have passed along some knowledge, too. Being involved with GALA and the NLA is my way of giving back to the industry.

Q: What do you do in your free time?
A: I needed to do something to stay healthy so I became a high school football referee and then a high-school and college lacrosse referee. When I first did a lacrosse game, it required a lot of running, and I didn’t think I’d make it through the game. But I kept at it and I eventually lost about 60 pounds. I do between 80 to 100 games a year and it’s great because you are just focused on the game, no interruptions or no cell phone, so it’s a great way for me to stay in shape and take my mind off the business for a while.

Used Motorcoach Party Bus Offers Redone Interior

FAIRFIELD, N.J. — Thanks to the limousine industry, a motorcoach can be viewed as much more than a staid, standard forward-facing passenger bus for chartered tours. “Limousine, Charter & Tour” Magazine regularly sees all kinds of conversions and uses for the biggest buses on the road.

This week’s featured pick is a 2008 Freightliner Limo Craftsman motorcoach custom-built for the seller and revamped in 2013. The 52-passenger bus is now listed on Limoforsale.com for $89,500 at 165,000 miles, which is considered low mileage for motorcoaches that often last well up into the upper 100,000s or even a million miles.

SPECS, PHOTOS, AND SELLER INFO HERE

A motorcoach equipped for limousine-style service can offer the most luxurious party bus, group tour, entertainer tour, or corporate road trip experiences. The seller, New Jersey Limousine & Bus Company, markets itself based on the advantage attributes of limousine companies: “We focus on safety, preventative maintenance, and many of our vehicles are garage kept…meticulously maintained.”

Cadillac Planning SUV, Sedan With Hefty Six Figure Prices

GM Inside News, citing a source “who is intimate with Cadillac’s projected product cadence,” stated the brand is anticipating releasing both an SUV and a sedan that will be priced in the $250,000-$300,000 range “before the end of the next decade.” That places both models in production and on the market by 2030.

Per the report, the SUV will be called the XT9, and it is said to be a completely bespoke vehicle that will start at the quarter-million-dollar range. This SUV would be a direct competitor to the likes of the Aston Martin DBX, Bentley Bentayga, and Lamborghini Urus, and it’s expected to debut “sometime closer to 2027.”

Audi Builds One-Of-A-Kind Stretch A8 L

Audi has manufactured a one-of-a-kind stretch limo out of their flagship A8 L executive sedan for one very lucky, and probably very rich, European buyer.

The vehicle comes equipped with a Quattro all-wheel-drive system and has a limited top speed of 155 mph. At almost 21-feet long, the stretch can seat six passengers. Also included is a 7.9-foot glass panel in the roof which is supposed to “enhance the sense of spaciousness.”

Builder Reportedly Creating Tesla Stretch Limo

Costa Mesa-based Big Limos claims it’s building the “first stretched Tesla Model S limousine.” An electrek reader sent the site a video time-lapse of the Model S being cut in half.

There’s no word on if they managed to pull it off yet, and considering they had to remove the battery pack before stretching the chassis, they will probably have a bunch of kinks to untangle before adapting the pack to the new wheelbase.
