AsterRide App Offers Safer Alternative To Typical TNCs

When you tap open the taxi and limo AsterRide app to hail a taxi, you’ll see something a bit different from other ride-hailing apps: a feature called InstaAlert.

It’s designed to help passengers notify friends or family that they’re in a taxi and to send an update once the rider arrives at a destination in one piece.

LANJ Stops TNC Access To Newark Airport, Train Station

The New York City skyline visible from the tarmac at Newark Liberty International Airport.

NEWARK, N.J.— Thanks to a strong lobbying effort by a coalition of taxi and limousine companies, the city of Newark on Feb. 22 issued an ordinance that bans Uber and Lyft drivers from Newark Liberty International Airport and Newark Penn Station.

The ban, which was put on hold last week after a City Council meeting on Tuesday, was enacted later that day and calls for the city’s police department to “take all appropriate action, including the ticketing and towing of unauthorized vehicles engaged in the business of carrying passengers.”

“We are thrilled with the enforcement action and that the city has recognized the illegalities of TNCs operating at the airport and train station,” said LANJ President Jeff Shanker (A-1 Limousine, Princeton). “We hope that this action is an impetus for other metro areas in the state to establish rules and regulations for TNCs.”

On Feb. 23, a contingent of LANJ representatives, Jason Sharenow (Broadway Elite Chauffeured Services Worldwide), Jon Epstein (Royal Coachman Worldwide), Karen Gajda (Country Club Transportation), Chris Stochholm (New Jersey Limo Finder) and LANJ Lobbyist Adam Kauffman met at Newark Airport with multiple agencies— EWR Management, Port Authority Police, Newark Police and Newark Taxi Enforcement and Elizabeth Taxi Enforcement — to lobby against illegal TNCs.
