Florida State Agency Declares Uber Drivers Contractors

Uber driver Delsa Bernardo, 54, is a former real estate agent and cafe owner. Bernardo has worked part-time as a driver for Uber in Miami for about eight months.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity has announced that Uber drivers are independent contractors, not company employees. Overall, the ruling, announced by the Deparment’s executive director, Jesse Panuccio, is a big victory for the transportation network company, which would otherwise have to pay unemployment benefits for all its Florida drivers.

The order comes after a lawsuit was filed by two former Uber drivers who applied for unemployment insurance earlier this year. Both were determined to be employees of Uber, which meant they were eligible for what is called reemployment assistance. Uber appealed the decision and won.

Virginia Student Bus Crash Raises Fears About Seat Ejections

Speed was to blame for a charter bus crash that injured 34 college students outside of Richmond, Va., on Nov. 29, 2015.
EDITORIAL: Earlier this week, a Home Ride bus with students from U.Va., Radford and Virginia Tech overturned outside of Richmond, injuring 34 of its 50 passengers.

While the incident may appear isolated for U.Va. students, transportation safety — especially for interstate buses — is important for students since they frequently take low-budget buses. Inadequate regulation can cost lives.

Counterattack: Four Uber Rivals Team Up Against TNC Giant

Uber is raising $2.1 billion in new private equity funding at a whopping $62 billion valuation. For context, that’s higher than the market cap of General Motors, and it was done at fairly standard terms (1x liquidation preference, no “ratchets”).

Second, four Uber rivals from around the globe have signed a “strategic partnership” through which they’ll work together on both technology and services. The new partners are Lyft (U.S.), Didi Kuaidi (China), GrabTaxi (SouthEast Asia) and Ola (India).
